It's a Carnivale fanvid, set to Wax Audio's "Dissolved by the Water All These Years" (a mashup of Tori Amos's "Silent All These Years", PJ Harvey's "Down By the Water", Bjork's "Cover Me", and Massive Attack's "Dissolved Girl"). voodoochild - that sounds freaking amazing. I want it.

killabeez - Me too! Goodness knows I have spent years wittering to Em about how zomgawesome that vid would be, and how perfectly it matches, and how creepy-cool the tone is. I just lack the skills to make it, as of this point in time.

Oh, I've just remembered another one that I've wanted to do for ages. It's a Cordelia (ATS) / Daniel Jackson (SG-1) vid, on the premise that they both ended up on the higher plains together at some point, and showing the similarities between things their characters went through. None of which I can remember at the moment - there were many and I wish I'd written them down. The song was going to be Thrown by Opshop, though I did struggle to find one that really fitted. I'm daunted mainly by the massive amount of source (3 seasons of BTVS, 4 seasons of Angel, and 10 seasons of SG1) I need to review and the logistics of making the vid work at all.

littleheaven that really sounds like an awesome vid even though I have no knowledge of SG1. I really hope you make it sometime.

I just had TEH AWESOMEST idea (well, in my opinion ;-) ) for a fanvid and I don't care if it's been done before. I really, really want to make an "Epic Childhood & Friendship Movies" vid, and it would include footage from Stand By Me, The Goonies, E.T., Super 8, The Sandlot, The Bad News Bears (the Walter Matthau version), Now & Then, My Girl, The War and perhaps Mighty Ducks and Little Rascals, and it would be amazing.
The problems are threefold:
1) I have no song 2) I don't own half the material I would need 3) Some of these films are so old that I bet the sources have different aspect/ratios and I have no idea how to fix that.
But I'm ridiculously in love with the idea. Maybe one day...

I shall add it to my list, so I don't forget about it again. legoline, you MUST make that vid. It sounds AMAZEBALLS. We can help with aspect ratio issues. I've spent years vidding Buffy and Angel, both of which switched from 4:3 to 16:9 halfway through the series. It was really easy to fix in Vegas with a preset crop that I just applied to every clip that was in the wrong ratio.

I agree that I'm sure many of us would be willing to help with aspect ratio issues. It does need an amazing song, but I'm sure with all the brilliant minds around here, someone will come up with something! I just watched Luminosity's Scooby Road this week (first time in years) and when you said this, I immediately thought of Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight, which has that childhood/innocence/growing up theme. So, something like that? ("You Can't Always Get What You Want" also came to mind.) Of course, those are songs from my childhood -- the records my parents had. This really needs to be made, though -- I know you'll find a song.

These are all on my "would like to do, but will never get around to it" list because the thought of going through a gazillion seasons of canon and requesting the DVDs one-by-one from Netflix to rip from makes me want to break down in tears. (I actually did this for a Babylon 5 vid, which is why it took me over a year to make. NEVER AGAIN.) For BSG, I want to make a Roslin/Adama vid to " Latter Days," by Over the Rhine. It would be very easy to map the chronology of the show onto it: first verse is the destruction of the colonies, first chorus is the jail/Kobol and cancer arcs of S1-S2, second verse is New Caprica, second chorus and final verse/epilogue/whatever-that's-actually-called-because-it-sounds-like-a-bridge-but-nothing-comes-after-it is the fourth season and particularly "Daybreak." For years, I've wanted to make a Scully vid to Hem's " Leave Me Here," because it seems to reflect how tragic but also how very, very strong she is. (Also, yes, because Mulder had a tendency to ditch her on cases in the early days. ) This is also one of my very favorite songs, and it would be a joy to vid. But NINE SEASONS. I feel like Toad the Wet Sprocket's " Windmills" could make a very good John Crichton vid, especially for later seasons Crichton. (In part because of the Don Quijote episode, heh.) The "any way the wind blows" lines in particular seem very Crichtonish to me. I also like that the tempo is slow enough to permit lingering shots without it feeling weird, but the guitar picking pattern would also make faster cuts seem like they fit.

Contrasting aspect ratios aren't actually too hard to fix, and like Killa said, I'm sure plenty of people can help you with it if you're having trouble figuring it out.

Maybe, MAYBE, I could force myself to crop the first one to match. Very maybe. The rest, or any of his other work -- look, I have more than one other project involving a single source that switched aspect ratios during its run, and I mostly don't mind tinkering with those. With this footage... it'd be like cropping the Mona Lisa. Drunk. With a canvas knife. This just requires a little thinking outside the box, IMO. My ultimate vid project may yet happen, but my "perfect" song is getting drafted for another project, so I'll have to go on another music hunt. My idea was to do a massively, massively multi-fandom vid to something in an unusual time signature (the piece I had picked out is 10/4, I think, though that's not really that weird) that starts out with widescreen, then stretched 4:3 as though I've messed up. At some point, the music needs to change, and the footage will pop out to fill the whole screen. I wanted to do things like shots of characters running down stairs where the widescreen staircase footage moves from the top of the 4:3 frame to the bottom as they descend. I'm thinking Marx Brothers and The Thin Man transitioning into people doing the Watusi and the Twist and then clips from 80's music videos. Maybe two minutes of visual chaos total. It would be so much fun. Anyway, thinking about aspect ratios, I wouldn't chop the end bits off of Greenaway's footage, certainly. That would be a hideous massacre. But what about a vid that uses mattes and split screens very extensively? Look at Prospero's Books. Check out 2:14, 3:26, and the edit at 3:44 that goes back to the single image. Or The Pillow Book. Check out the way the frame is divided up at the beginning around 0:05. 0:56 has a nice asymmetrical composition. I can't find a clip on youtube right now, but that movie has an amazing bookbinding sequence with at least a 4-way split screen showing the different steps. Scrolling strips of text to fill in the missing space (think Blade Runner or The Matrix or lots of Greenaway's own work), static Photoshop images as frames around moving images that change size and shape, scenes from different movies with different aspect ratios overlapping and becoming more and less transparent just like in the original footage: There's plenty you could do without just hacking off the ends of shots and ruining the composition. Personally, I think you've chosen the perfect director to use for a multi-aspect ratio vid.

elipie, littleheaven & killabeez Well, I'mglad I'm not the only one who thought it was an awesome idea ;D Your offer to help me find a song and fix the aspect/ratio thing only makes it more tempting. I better start getting hold of source material then, eh? killabeez It would need a really awesome song. Something uplifting but with sweet lyrics, sort of, should be a little older, too, I guess? I know exactly the kind of song I want, I just wonder wherther it exists at all. Maybe along the lines of "Daydream Believer" by The Monkees? (Not lyricswise, but the tone?) I guess "Glory Days" by Bruce Springsteen has been done to death. Then again, the lyrics don't really match 100% either. littleheaven That sounds like on daunting vid but I love the idea.

These all sound awesome! I've really enjoyed reading this thread. It's great to read everyone's awesome ideas isn't it? I love how everyone is so encouraging! Mixed aspect ratio? No problem, we can help you fix that / here are some ideas how you could make it work without cropping. Can't find a song? Here's a few that could work. 10 seasons of source? Just go for it! ;D Jaz
