This topic briefly popped up on another thread and I thought it was interesting to warrant its own discussion. Do you have this idea of an amazing, epic, ULTIMATE VID that you're gonna make one day? But the sheer size of it, the amount of source you're going to have to gather and watch and edit, that always stops you dead in your tracks before you even begin? Maybe if enough of us gather here, we can egg each other on enough to get us to do something about it. ;D For me, my Ultimate Vid Idea is a Alexander/Merlin/Kings crossover about epic bromance. But it's going to need a lot of external footage too, because I want it to cover aspects of history and people and nature and art, and it's just one of those sprawling monsters of an idea that will never turn out as well as it sits in my head. But I feel like I will have to make it at some point because I NEED to have that achievement in my life. I'm just trying psych myself up enough to dive into it.

obsessive24 - Wow, that does sound really really complex!
I've been wanting to make an ensemble/overview vid for hbo's OZ for years. I even started once but wasn't happy with it at all. I just didn't get the "yes, this is gonna work" feeling. Plus there is so much source and the show is shot very differently from other sources I vidded.
I've been thinking about trying again though.

obsessive24 Ooooooooooooooooh I'm very much in favour of that! :-) It sounds epic! Me, I've been wanting to do a "Strong Women in Period Drama" video set to I Will Dance by Katzenjammer for a long while but even though I love period drama I feel I'd have to get my hands on much, much more source material. I mean, even if I just made a "Strong Women" vid sans the period drama limitation I think I'd have to get my hands on a lot more footage than I currently own to do it justice. Ah, but the temptation! Secondly I have an idea for a Game of Thrones vid set to "Three Ravens", but the song is rather long and the arrangement is rather plain, so I feel that the video would have to be really, REALLY good and witty and multi-layered to hold the viewer's interest.

My ultimate vid idea is taking a somewhat extended concept of one interpretation of the movie The Fountain, in which the characters of Izzy and Tommy played by Rachel Weisz and Hugh Jackman are soulmates through out time and space and I was going to take clips from all the actors movies and combine them together in one epic love story.
I have the song all picked out but the thought of reviewing all the sources and laying out the clips in some fashion that makes sense makes me cry.
But I still really want to make it. So much.

In 2009 I was watching BSG, and I heard a song that I could swear to you was about that show. I decided I *needed* to try out this vidding thing for myself, to try to express how I felt about this show and this song. About all the themes of the Other and the religion and what exactly IS humanity anyway? Robots surprisingly having emotions and caring for each other. Seeming to have, what I guess would, in-universe, be considered a soul. You know, the small stuff that a baby vidder could totally chug out in a few weeks. I actually got impressively far through it before I realised that both my technical and narrative building skills were just not up to the task.
I wisely decided to put it on the backburner, where it's been ever since. I decided instead to gradually improve my ability until I'm ready to do the idea justice. I think now I'm totally ready technical skill wise, but the narrative stuff I'm finding a lot more difficult. I'll get there.
Since then I've also found another song I want to vid with BSG, which will be even more of a challenge. It's going to be about the use of women in the show, about bodies and... something something. It's this drum and bass song which is going to require more special effects and perfect timing and sense of movement than I'm capable of atm.
Either way, I'm going to have to go through all the source, including the parts of it that I just can't face yet. I don't know if these ideas are Ultimate, but the first one was the reason I started vidding in the first place, so I feel like I owe it to bring it to life. The second one is my special-effects Everest.

I have a couple of 'epic vid' ideas that are waiting out there for my skills to improve and match the images in my head Most often what stops me trying a vid is the knowledge that I just can't do it justice yet - that my skills and software can't meet my expectations. The vids are out there, and they'll still be there in a few years when I might be closer to where I need to be to make the vid I want. Jaz

Well maybe not ultimate but it's one that's epic and will haunt me until i find a way. MLC 3. I had started it way back when but deleted it in a fit a rage. I haven't restarted it mostly for the same reason I deleted it. How do you make a video about Xander and Spikes baby and still keep Buffy dead. I had some great special effects going. I know I made it look like Dawn was carrying a baby in places.

Alexander/Merlin/Kings crossover
obsessive24- I think I just drooled a little. Also, I may be having trouble catching my breath, now. Is there anything we can do to encourage you to work on this?
I've never made a crossover vid. But my current "maybe someday" vid is a crossover between Burn Notice and Dexter, set to "Oye Como Va." Last week there was a scene with Quinn and Batista smoking pot in a convertible, and then the week after, I swear there was a scene where you can see Michael Westen's black Charger in the background. Both these things made me really wish this vid existed. (Just the thought of a whole sequence of Fiona and Deb kicking ass makes me tingly.)
Sometimes I fantasize that 2 Fast 2 Furious would also be part of this vid.

I keep starting this video and never getting past the first few seconds of it...The song is one most everyone I know hates, it has no drums, no beat, and is a complete metaphor (except for one verse, that always throws me). Anyhow, it would be my last true 'Spuffy' vid, and it would be to Play Crack the Sky by Brand New. I really think that I will never really be able to pull it off, it would take a much more skilled vidder than me to do it properly.

Everyone's Ultimate Vid Idea sounds awesome. I'm getting a sense that a lot of our hesitation comes from feeling like we're not in a place execution-wise to do the idea justice. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing... I hope Bradcpu wouldn't mind my name-dropping him. He basically said the idea for Living Dead Girl was the reason he started vidding in the first place. But he didn't make it until, IIRC, at least a year after he started vidding (which was something like 10 vids in), because he didn't feel he was technically advanced enough to achieve what he was seeing in his head. Now, years after the fact, I'm very glad he sat on the idea until he was ready to do it, because it remains one of my favourite vids of all time, and I agree that he probably couldn't have done the same thing sooner in his progress as a vidder.
mithborien - I'm in love with your vid idea. It sounds so insane and sprawling and epic, which is what I say about The Fountain anyway, but you just made it 100x more so. I want to see that vid!
xandra - "How do you make a video about Xander and Spikes baby and still keep Buffy dead." HOW INDEED?! I'm somehow forcefully reminded of the epic Catbaby vid.
killa - wouldn't say no to piles of money! ;D In seriousness, gah, it's just so damn daunting to dig through PILES and PILES of external source. The actual canon source isn't all that much. Dexter's getting a bit big in terms of source. How many season's Burn Notice got?

wouldn't say no to piles of money! obsessive24- if I had piles of money, I would totally spend it on fans making me things I want. Burn Notice is 5 seasons (16-18 eps ea) and Dexter is 6 (12 eps each).

I think I already made mine. It's called Flagpole Sitta - spans all 10 seasons of Stargate SG-1 ;D
The one I have sitting half-made is an epic "love in the 80's" vid that I'm dedicating to Eunice when it's done (she knows why) and I don't know why I haven't finished it yet. I've clipped about 15 films and all I have to do is actually edit the vid. I think it's because it represents my teenage years, and the actual vid could never be as awesome as it is in my head. I will do it, hopefully before 2012 draws to a close. It's on my list!

I have two. One is an epic arty thing that I'm not even going to try to summarize this late at night, and the other is an equally epic BSG vid to Wax Audio's Lady Gaga/Judas Priest mashup (no, trust me, just listen to it). I'm not anything like good enough to make either of them right now; in addition to which, the first has footage issues which are going to necessitate doing my own DVD ripping and probably take up a lot more disc space than I have*, and I'd actually have to get back on speaking terms with BSG for the second. * and then there's the aspect ratio problem once I took care of that, and ooooh, trust me, if there's one director whose shots I am NOT happy about cropping to fit...
