One day I am going to make my fallen angel vid to Nick Cave's 'Oh My Lord'. In this case, it's not the sources that are imposing, because I know what I want to use and it's mostly movies I own, but the song is 7:30 min, and I want to have the vid fit that ... I don't want to cut the song at all.
But the song is so intimidating, and I don't pre-plan my vids enough to be confident I can structure such a long vid. But one day. Because the trope is one I love a lot, and I'm determined I will say my piece on it!

I think I already made mine. It's called Flagpole Sitta - spans all 10 seasons of Stargate SG-1 ;D Really! I didn't know that was your Ultimate Vid Idea. Very cool. Em - now you've got me so curious as to your vid idea so epic it cannae be spoken. ;D And, I'm so with you about still waiting for a time I could look BSG in the eye. Welcome genusshrike! Oh man, Kiwi vidders are totally represent on this board. ;D I remember a conversation during Vidukon this year where absolutedestiny mentioned he wanted to see more long vids, and also talked about the way long vids may be structured that'd be different to shorter vids to both take advantage of the bigger canvas, and also how to get over the attention span deficit problem, it was quite interesting.

I'd be interested to hear more about that. I have a few clips laid down for a song that's 6:14, and I'm a bit uncertain about whether it'll get made at all for this reason. I'm a bit at a loss for what to do with all that space.

Um, I don't remember if it ever became a conversation per se, but yeah, that should be a good discussion to have. I know absolutedestiny is lurking around somewhere, being lurky. Maybe start a thread? Sweetestdrain did a 10 minute vid a couple of years ago so I'm sure she has lots of experience to share.

Oh, I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts on longer vids. Maybe my GoT vid will get made one of these days then :-)

mithborien - I'm in love with your vid idea. It sounds so insane and sprawling and epic, which is what I say about The Fountain anyway, but you just made it 100x more so. I want to see that vid! That is precisely why it hasn't happened yet. At the rate I am going in producing vids, it would take YEARS to make it. And I would want to include all their movies, which means watching all their movies, which totally isn't a hardship. But oh the time! But I so want to see the vid as well. One day...

... okay, bear in mind that I want to major in film theory when I get to Proper College, and adjust your pretentiousometers accordingly. My absolute dream project, the one that actually got me to start vidding, is a kind of visually-associative trip through the work of Peter Greenaway, set to David Bowie's "The Voyeur of Utter Destruction (As Beauty)."I am not anywhere near good enough to make this vid. I do not have anything like the TECH to make this vid. And then there's the aspect ratio problem, because of the work of his I've so far been able to find in .avi (which is not all of it) I have so far counted three separate ones, and, well, look: ( The Falls) ( The Draughtsman's Contract) ( The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover -- incidentally, the resizing is just awful, the original cap's huge, but that IS a very young Alex Kingston at center left) Maybe, MAYBE, I could force myself to crop the first one to match. Very maybe. The rest, or any of his other work -- look, I have more than one other project involving a single source that switched aspect ratios during its run, and I mostly don't mind tinkering with those. With this footage... it'd be like cropping the Mona Lisa. Drunk. With a canvas knife. So it may not be possible. But goddamn, the song is so perfect, and the way it flows in my head is so amazing, that I kind of have to hang onto the hope.

thatyourefuse: I would so watch that vid! But yeah, cutting down a frame from Prospero's Books would feel like desecration.

Yeah. Really -- if it were any other director -- but Greenaway shots are so achingly composed that I'm fairly sure fucking with them would earn one a hell so special as to make the child molesters and people who talk at the theater gossip on their coffee break about how glad they are not to be there.
I love the concept so much, though.

I feel like I have about *fifty* ultimate vid ideas! Epic, at least. I'm somewhat weird about talking about my vid ideas too much, because I always think somehow I'll jinx them, but I will at least say this much about the vids on my list --
1) requires me to rewatch 10 seasons of source; 2) is the only reason I still have my DVD subscription to Netflix, because omg I need so many different movies for it; 3) would involve Supernatural, and am I really up to diving back into that fandom? 4) requires a lot of work with text and I have no idea how to even approach it; 5) requires me to clip ALL THE STAR TREKS; 6) involves reincarnation through many different sources; 7) is the sequel to Catbaby. (Yes! It's happening! ...once I have time to finish my part of the draft and pass it on.)
I really need to start thinking smaller...
Reading through the other comments, omg, I want to see ALL those vids! Also, we should really should talk about longer vids, because I want to see more of those, too. I think that for me, the success of a long vid depends mostly (not entirely, but mostly!) on the song choice itself -- does the song do enough? Does it *move* enough? (For my 10 minute vid, I really lucked out with Patti Smith and her crazy brain. She does not bore.)

My Ultimate Vid Idea requires a gazillion sources, many of which are not available at Netflix and others of which I lost in external hard drive crashes. Also, when I started collecting and reviewing sources, I didn't think I was good enough yet. Multi-fandom vids still intimidate me. But now the main problems are re-aquiring the sources and finding the time.

I also had this other idea, which I would gladly pass on to another more talented vidder if they wanted it. I really, really, wanted to do Long Road to Ruin by Foo Fighters to Arab Spring. Yeah. But there is the problem of most of the source being on youtube camera phone videos, and taking screen shots of websites, and it totally works in my head, I just have no idea how in the world I would accomplish it.

Oh man, Kiwi vidders are totally represent on this board. I always surprised how many of us there are! One of my old school friends even turned out to be a secret vidder. I've definitely seen longer vids I think work really well, I think I just need to study them intently. Not that I need an excuse to watch things over and over. thatyourefuse, that sounds like it would be an awesome project! I'm usually pretty blase about cropping into different aspect ratios, but yeah, I can see there are times it would be painful.

I think I already made mine. It's called Flagpole Sitta - spans all 10 seasons of Stargate SG-1 ;D @littlehaven - oh maaaaan, that vid is the best <3 & me too, i've already made a couple of my 'ultimate' vids. one of them is a multifandom thing about depression/suicide, and the other is a crossover of crouching tiger hidden dragon/ hero/ house of flying daggers/ memoirs of a geisha. never thought i'd finish either of them! but the one thing that i've always wanted to do, but never really had the courage to is a lord of the rings vid. i'm not exactly sure why, because i've had a few different ideas (my newest bunny is bittersweet by apocalyptica). but the trilogy is just so... epic. i can't quite deal with it. i agree, the song choice would be the most important thing. it's a bit silly, but sometimes (quite often) i get bored with a vid even if it's just over 3 minutes :/ and i think it mostly happens when i'm not convinced by the song choice...
