Hi all Very cool to have a new vidding discussion area! I started vidding not so long ago, and have a couple of vids to share, but I'm not sure how to go about doing that. I know a lot of people use youtube, but I've also read a lot about people having their vids muted or having to take them down. Currently I have my vids stored in a public file on dropbox, but I'm not sure how well this will work long term. I'm not sure how secure the file is there. I wouldn't be averse to paying a small fee for hosting with the right service, but it would have to be a minimally technical process as I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to the tech Thanks in advance Jaz

Hi winterjasmine! A couple of questions: do you want to offer your vids in streaming format, or offer them for download, or both? Do you mean where you can get people to host your vids? Or where you put them up to be seen by people? I use Vimeo for streaming. Recommend password-locking your vid and then just letting people know the password where you post the streaming video. There are other options like Vidders net and Blip TV; other people will be able to give a better account of those. I'm personally not a big fan of YouTube because, as you said, sometimes the automatic process will mute your music and sometimes the vid will get reported and taken down. There are plenty of workarounds (speeding up/slowing down music by 5+% seems to work, as does long intro credits, etc), but for me personally it's too much bother. I'm sure lots of other people will be able to give you advice if you want to give YouTube a try though. As for downloading, temporary free hosting sites like Megaupload or Filefront do seem sufficient for a lot of people. If you are after something more permanent and don't mind paying some money, then maybe buy your own hosting. I use Surpass and find them to be really helpful and easy to use. You need to know how to use FTP but that can be learned in like 2 minutes. Lastly, about where to actually share your vids to be seen. A lot of people on this forum have a Livejournal presence, and a good place to start is the vidding community. You can either post your vid there, or maybe post your vid on your own journal, then link it in an announcement to the vidding community. And of course we have a vid sharing board on this forum as well, so maybe it's time we kicked off with someone sharing their vids there!

Seconding Vimeo. I use it for my streaming, and of what's available out there I find it has the best quality for the least hassle. Tried YouTube for awhile, but they kept shutting my vids down.
It's easy enough to lock down a vid on Vimeo and then putting the password on your announcement so it's safe from takedown and easy to embed and share. The downside is if you like having your stuff easily searchable and found in general. YouTube definitely has the advantage in being accessible outside lj based com announcements and recs.

I've heard instances of Vimeo occasionally taking down people's vids even when they're password-locked, but that's the risk you run with pretty much every streaming site, I guess. Vidders net (previously Imeem) is fan run so you won't get takedowns, but I'm not terribly enamoured of their streaming quality and conversion downtime after uploading a vid, so haven't done much with them in a while.

I use youtube and haven't had a vid taken down in a while. I think it's only a major problem if you're vidding something like BtVS when they are really strict on vidding, I lost my last account to a Buffy vid. The other reason vids get taken down is the music, which might just be me but they seemed to have lightened up recently. I always check if the song is a take down before had (simply by searching for it; if there's nothing I know it's banned). However, I get a lot of people in Germany who can't watch my vid because Germany obviously isn't a lenient, in those cases I'm happy to offer them a download link (personally I use SendSpace). To be honest, I'm wary of putting my vids up for download publicly because it's the easiest way for them to be stolen (something I luckily haven't experienced first hand but I've seen it happen), I don't mind people downloading them for personal use though, especially if I know the person. So yeah, I just chance it with YT

To prevent clip theft, I still use a watermark on my vids although I see it less and less these days. For me it's starting to be a way I brand my vids as well as a clip theft deterrant. ;D agirlnamedtruth - For me, when I started putting years online about 6 years ago, the internet speeds and services available were such that streaming quality/availability wasn't anywhere as good as downloading and then watching. So I think that's why I've always offered a download as my primary vid vehicle, even though the technology has moved on significantly since then. So it's always very interesting for me to see people who use streaming as their primary and often only vehicle of vid distribution. I think it's just a sign that I'm falling behind with the technology, and like all old people I'm resistant to changing with the times.

However, I get a lot of people in Germany who can't watch my vid because Germany obviously isn't a lenient, in those cases I'm happy to offer them a download link (personally I use SendSpace). This has been a constant dibate in Germany for some while. Basically, we have an instituation called GEMA who make sure that you pay your taxes if you own a TV (and are thus able to watch the channels sponsored by the state as opposed to private channels which finance themselves by commercial breaks). They also make sure you pay taxes if you use music for a public purpose, like a radio station or for a big event, so that the artist whose music is used gets their royalties. What the GEMA is thus claiming basically is that putting songs on YT is illegal as the artist in question doesn't profit from it, hence very often we poor German sods get the "Not available in your country" message. It's an ongoing dispute between YT and GEMA and it seems it's not going to be resolved soon.

Well, that sounds rather mean for the people's enjoyment, but to me it seems to make sense that a country which has strict enforcement of tax policy is one of the only ones in Europe that isn't currently up to its eyeballs in debt.
YT is blocked in China too. But as far as I can tell, it's just because the Government doesn't want people to access Bad Content the Government has deemed Bad For Their Brains. ;D

obsessive24 I've never looked at it that way However, because of that I mainly use vimeo and I'm always glad for downloadable versions of vids. There's this wonderful Harry Potter vid called "Marchin' On" by dazzleme7 on YT that doesn't seem to have a downloadable version. Since I can only watch the vid via a proxy (but can't download using that proxy) I eventually had to ask someone on my flist to snatch the video from YT for me. I wish that girl would put that video up for download somewhere. So, from my side, download links are definitely appreciated

Ooh, I could have a fix for that. After I downloaded and installed the free version of Realplayer (for the Real Converter, a good program for converting to ipod-compatible m4v), now every time I watch a YT vid, there's a little Realplayer button asking if I want to download the video. And it's really easy to use, and you can convert it to other formats using Real Converter after you've downloaded it. It's a really neat little free package, check it out.

I have RealPlayer inatalled and that box pops up too, but only with the YT vids I can watch in Germany. The other videos are completely blocked. *sigh* But thank you

A couple of questions: do you want to offer your vids in streaming format, or offer them for download, or both? I think, for a new vidder it's important to offer streaming above download, because you're not known, and possibly people won't want to go to the hassle of downloading the whole vid straight off. I certainly know that if I'm short on time I tend not to go for a download link of a vidder I don't know, but maybe that's just me! Having said that, I love to keep copies of my favourite vids, so offering a download link would also be good. So I guess streaming would be my first priority, and then looking at download in the future Do you mean where you can get people to host your vids? Or where you put them up to be seen by people? Right now I'm looking at hosting / streaming and getting the technical side sorted out before I start directing people to muted vids and links that don't work Thanks for the info on Vimeo, I will definitely check it out. I've tried Vidders.net but the upload wouldn't work for me, I didn't know if it was something to do with being in the UK. Jaz
