Seconding Vimeo. I use it for my streaming, and of what's available out there I find it has the best quality for the least hassle. Tried YouTube for awhile, but they kept shutting my vids down. It's easy enough to lock down a vid on Vimeo and then putting the password on your announcement so it's safe from takedown and easy to embed and share. The downside is if you like having your stuff easily searchable and found in general. YouTube definitely has the advantage in being accessible outside lj based com announcements and recs. Thanks for the tips, I'll definitely be checking out Vimeo as it seems to tick all my boxes Jaz

I've tried Vidders.net but the upload wouldn't work for me, I didn't know if it was something to do with being in the UK. I'm in the UK at the moment and it still works for me, but yeah, there's something weird in the uploading process for Vidders where, even though the vid's uploaded, it takes ages to be processed to the point where you can actually stream it. A lot of the time the video just shows timestamps of "0:00/0:00" for me. Not super helpful, unfortunately, especially when I'm dying to post a new vid. ;D And FWIW I agree with you that as a newbie it's probably more important to offer a good streaming option that lets people see your work at a glance. Download is good for different reasons, but I agree that should probably take second priority to streaming these days.

I'm also not a huge fan of the layout of the site there. Anyhoo, trying Vimeo now, so we'll see how that goes. Then I just have to pluck up the courage and post Jaz

I do it the old fashion way, I have my own webspace. I call it cheaper than therapy to justify the yearly expense. Not that I have to but I also give a media fire link, but that because about 1% of people have trouble dling from my website. For visibility I still post on youtube but I got one warning so I don't post my x-files there anymore.

obsessive24 - I stamp mine too, on the advice of a friend a few years back when clip stealing was big. I'm more concerned about someone taking the whole vid and claiming it as theirs. Some people have the nerve to do that even when it's watermarked and a well known vidder. To be honest, I can't even think why they do it, all they get is an instant backlash legoline - Have you tried Zamzar for when you want a download-able copy of a vid you can't watch, cause all they need is the youtube link and they can rip it. It's not necessarily HQ but it works for me when I want to have a copy of a vid (for purely personal use, such as sticking it on repeat lol) ***is not condoning any form of ripping site, just mentioning it passing***

xandra - it is cheaper than therapy. That's a good way of looking at it. ;D Some people have the nerve to do that even when it's watermarked and a well known vidder. To be honest, I can't even think why they do it, all they get is an instant backlash I don't understand it either. When I first started vidding and had no idea where to get source, I did start out by taking bits and clips of other people's vids, but I never posted those vids that I made. ;D Even then, I didn't use the clips with watermarks. It just seemed like an incredibly silly thing to do because everyone will immediately see it's not yours. Not sure how any kind of good feeling comes of that?

I have mine hosted at my own webspace. I'm on a Mac so I used Rapidweaver to create the site, and it offers both embedded streaming and download options. I also have some vids at Vidders.net, but I think I have maxed out my free uploads there. I also have some at Vimeo, and Archive Of Our Own. My site is the only one that has everything up though. When I release a vid I generally just provide a link to my site page with the stream and download links.
I am one of those people that, if I don't know a vidder, I'll look for a stream of their vid first. If I really like it, then I'll take the trouble to download it. If there's no stream, then normally I'll walk on by.

Hi littleheavenThanks for the info about Rapidweaver, that looks like a good option, I'll probably go with something like that when / if it comes to offering download links. Jaz

Gonna give away free samples if you want people to buy the product. Or something. ;D

I had a similiar program but since the video is blocked for my IP the program couldn't download the vids. I shall try Zamzar out, though, maybe I'll have more luck with that program. Thanks!

I have my own site where I host the downloads - they'll usually be a tiny WMV, and various sized XviD avis.
I also stream at a few sites - Vimeo I love but I just put a few on there all password locked.
Viddler.net has all my vids and doesn't block any countries, so I tend to use these as the stream link on my site. Playback is not perfect but at least everyone has a chance to see them. They have however now stopped free accounts so if you want to join I think they will ask for cashie money.
Vidders.net - good intentions but slow on the approval (frustrating) and the playback is glitchy. Private network so no copyright problems.
And finally I gave in and put some on YouTube seeing as I was forever finding my vids (in stolen clips or as a whole) posted by everyone else but me. I hate the copyright blocks, but the wide exposure is good. No warnings yet but I realise I have just tempted fate by saying that.
Blip TV dumped my account within days but I could have been unlucky.

I also have my own site where I offer both download and streaming links. The host of the site doesn't allow to upload bigger files than 15 MB, which is not enough for vids usually. SO I upload the files at Mediafire and only the download links can be found at the site.
For streaming I use a Hungarian community's Ning site, some of my vids are on Vimeo and some others are on Youtube. And I used Vidders.net previously, a few vids are up there, too.

The host has a free and a paid package. Mine is free. I think they want to make everyone to be moved to paid category.
I'm OK with Mediafire uploads, so I'll stay where I am.

Hi thedothatgirl and valika, thanks for your tips and info! It's really interesting to read about the different set-ups different vidders use, so thanks for sharing Jaz
