15 MB?? Yeah, they probably are trying to purposefully push people towards the paid version. Jaz - I definitely agree that streams are important, but I would also offer download links if possible, even in the beginning. It's nice to be able to rewatch a vid you liked months or even years later without having to hunt down the stream (particularly if the vid was since blocked or deleted). For downloads any of the standard free sites are usually fine, so Mediafire, 4Shared, Megaupload, etc. The latter two will also give you a streaming option if you upload the video file directly (i.e. not a zipped file).

I upload all vids to my website and offer d/l and streaming from there. (the JWPlayer is quite a nifty solution: www.longtailvideo.com/players/). I only publish on LJ, at my journal and the vidding community. I put a watermark on my vids, mostly because I like the idea of having a recognizable logo on my stuff.

amnisias - just trying to figure out what JWPlayer does - allows you to stream from your own site? I am starting to want to look into that. Especially if at some point Vimeo stops working for me.
It's weird about watermarks. I used to use mine pretty exclusively for the purpose of anti-theft, but these days I hardly go on YT to watch vids, so if my vids are being stolen, I'm blissfully unaware of it, so I think of the watermark is much more of a branding thing now, as you said.

I haven't watermarked my vids so far because I felt it a little pretentious for a newbie like me to assume people would either steal it or be interested in a "brand", but maybe I'll do it next time around

I tend to think about it the other way: if you don't build your brand from your newbie days, it would be weirder if you became a vidding oldie and then suddenly brought out a "brand" from nowhere. ;D

Yes, it allows you to stream from your website. You need to upload your vids in flv format and upload the JW player to your website, and then you can stream. The JW Player web page also has a code generate for technically challenged people like me. I use it to stream my vids on LJ and it's working a treat for me. rhoboat has done a very nifty tutorial on this if you get stuck: rhoboat.dreamwidth.org/132320.html

Thanks, I do have that bookmarked somewhere, just haven't had a reason to fully implement it yet. I'm lazy like that. ;D I'll wait for the day Vimeo eventually pulls my stuff, then Imma gonna need to get my arse into gear.

I like to post my vids on both Vimeo and YouTube. YouTube is really faulty because, like you guys have already mentioned, they often block certain countries or mute the song, etc, but I've gotten so much more viewership for posting over there. I like using Vimeo as a backup for people in blocked countries and for people who just prefer streaming somewhere other than YouTube.
I agree, I love when people provide downloads of their vids! I like having easy access if I suddenly need to show one to a friend (which has happened... a lot) or if I just want to rewatch it.

elipie - since you mention viewership on YT, here's something I've been wondering since I don't have an active YT account: do you find there's any difference in the types of comments you receive on YT versus, say, LJ? Do you find that audiences generally look for different things in these two communities, do they seem quite similar to you?

winterjasmine - I've had issues with uploading to Vidders.net recently. They have two uploaders, so I just try both. Eventually one will stick. I'm in the UK too btw.

I like vimeo because it allows both streaming and downloads.
Youtube gets me a lot more views than embedding at LJ or AO3 (~50-100 times more), but fewer comments or even thumbs up. I'm sure I'll run into clip theft eventually, but given the youtube focus on product over creator (IMO, anyway), I don't really care. If people steal from me to increase the number of vids or fans in my tiny fandoms, so much the better.

Thanks for the tips It seems consensus is that streaming is most important for a newbie vidder, but it's also good to offer download links once you get any good I'll definitely check out the sites you recommend, thanks! elipie thanks for your thoughts. It seems like the best option might be having multiple options! Jaz
