I finally started on the first treat. Despite it having commentaries in some scenes; I decided to work around that. Even clipped the entire thing to huge avi-files because SV doesn't like the VOBs of that DVD. I even managed to edit an entire solo out of the song and I am SO proud of that because you really wouldn't notice something's missing. AND NOW ONE OF THE VOB FILES IS SO CORRUPTED THAT SV DOESN'T EVEN RECOGNISE THE CONVERTED AVI FILE. I don't know what to do now. Just rip the DVD again? I'm almost done with the treat but I need that particular VOB because it has the best scenes from the finale and everything. *pulls hair* dragonchic Ooooh, you have me all curious now ;D

I'm confused because the VOB wasn't corrupted before? But it is now? What happened to it? I would personally definitely re-rip it if it has footage you need. What's the question/issue, exactly?

It's one of the VOBs, and one that I really need.
SV has trouble with reading all of them ("them" being my current source material), hence why I've been converting them to avis using Virtual Dub Mod. The DVD is rather old and for some reason DVD Decrypter ripped it with the commentaries bit, and I suspect both the age and the additional material makes it hard for SV to use. However, one of the VOBs file seems to be corrupted, as Virtual Dub Mod only converted it with a lot of pleading and nudging from my side, and the resulting avi SV can't use either. I'll try ripping the source again, I guess....

Alas, no such luck. Ripped the DVD again but it is still corrupted. This is the error message I get when I open the file in VDMOD. I tried getting another file via the internets and convert it to MPEG-2 but that turned out really grainy. Attachments:

legoline - I just wanted to suggest DVD shrink for ripping. It's freeware and so far it's been working well for me, so maybe it will work with that particular DVD.

DVDDecrypter is also a possibility, although IIRC it hasn't been updated in years. It always worked well for me, though it may not be able to crack newer DVDs. And eek, no spankings please, Nicky! Knew I shouldn't have said anything.

Have you ever used SmartRipper? I don't know that it's supported anymore but I'm using it currently with Windows 7 and it's working a treat. Can I just say MY FESTIVID IS FINISHED!!! ? I was so worried I wouldn't get done in time this year. I'm sick, exhausted, and having a hard time coping with the first Christmas since my husband died, so I'm going to give myself a few days off, then start on the treat I wanted to make. It still needs a beta, but it's in a state where I would be happy posting as is if I had to. I am SO relieved.

lillythekid: Ooooh, DVD Shrink is shiny! (Usually I use DVD Decrypter). Unfortunately, I still get the error message so I fear my DVD may actually be busted and I'm not sure if I can justify buying a new one. Boo. I guess I'll move on to other treats for the time being. I already have the song for one, so I should start ripping the source, I guess. ;D Still trying to find songs for two others. Also, my assinment is as good as finished (though looking at it now it feels like I really improved a lot in the past couple of months and I think I'd do some things differently now) and just needs to be exported and tweaked with Avisynth.

Uploaded my second treat vid over the holidays, and now I think I'm done with Festivids this year. I can probably do more if I wanted to, but didn't want to push my luck/enthusiasm. I actually started on another and then couldn't finish because of tech problems, so it's just as well no one knew who/what it was for. ;D

I'm about to upload my Festivids assignement! Off to figure out how to do the uploading and the signed post...
Just randomly and out of curiousity: the signed vids--do you put watermarks on them? Or do you just put your name in the credits?

legoline -- Congrats on finishing! It's up to you whether or not you want to put a watermark, but "signed" just means that you add your name/credits.

Thanks I'm looking at some of last year's signed vids and it seems most of them didn't watermark them. I guess I won't either, then. Name will have to do I'm a bit nervous because I get the feeling my recipient was really hoping that someone would vid a specific fandom--which I didn't, because even though I know the source I don't have the source material and I don't think I could have pulled that specific prompt off. I didn't sign up for the fandom either and so I went with the source I had signed up for, but I still feel bad about it. I really hope someone makes them that prompt as a treat.

I think it's totally understandable to feel that way, and I think a lot of people probably feel the same. If it makes you feel any better, I think your recipient will be happy to get anything at all, as long as it's not the complete opposite of what they requested (and even so, you're not by any means obligated to cater to the prompt, although I think most people do the best they can). Don't feel bad, though, I'm sure if they want it that badly, they'll probably eventually vid it themselves!
