I'm doing Festivids for the third time and I'm so excited (and I'm also scared, as usual).
I love Festivids because this is like a vidder's best Christmas present. So many incredibly gorgeous vids to watch, getting one made especially for me, yay! Additionally Festivids is forcing me to step across my own borders, to vid fandoms normally I don't even think about I will.
I'm so excited about my assignment vid! Though I'm scared a little at the same time, because I haven't started vidding this yet. It took a long time to find the right song and I'm rather busy in these days.

I've always been a bit reluctant to do Festivids, because of the commitment and me being such a slow vidder, but last year I just jumped in there and low and behold, it turns out I work better with deadlines. I was really looking forward to this year, but life is so busy right now that I missed the sign up. I'm still hoping to do a gift vid, but at the very least I'll watch ALL THE VIDS and offer beta to other festividders.

amnisias: I also can work much better under pressure, you are not alone. Making a gift vid for someone at Festivids - go, do it! This will be fun! Maybe I'll come back to you, when I'll have a draft and need a beta, if you don't mind.

Amnisias - Me, too! Deadlines completely force me to stay focused and actually finish things once in awhile. Valika - Absolutely everything you said sums up my opinion, too! I was given the source I was crossing my fingers that I would get and I am almost finished! But, I also have some worries about my choices... So, I have a question. I think I've taken a risk I possibly shouldn't have. It occurred to me, a couple days ago, that maybe experimenting and doing iffy things isn't something you should do in these kinds of situations? When you don't 100% know it'll be okay with the recipient? I mean... yes, I'm making the vid and yes, I should be having fun, but at the end of the day, how much of the vid really belongs to me and how much of it should be done solely for the recipients benefit? Does anyone else have any of these fears or opinions on the matter? It's possible I'm just having a mini festi freak out.

Hmm, interesting question. If it were for an auction, I'd say the implicit contract is that you are making something that the bidder wanted, not making something for yourself. Then again, don't know if Festivids is analogous to auctions because there's no monetary outlay involved. (Although there is consideration in the form of that person agreeing to make a vid for someone else.) Anyway, my gut feeling is that it is akin to an auction, because it's about Christmas spirit and the spirit of giving, right? So it feels like your needs and wants should be secondary to what the recipient wants.
Personally, I'd say if you know or have reason to suspect they're not gonna like it, then you shouldn't do it for this particular vid. But if you don't have any grounds on which to suspect they won't like it other than the fact that it's experimental, then I'd give myself more leeway.

I'm participating for my second year, but pretty nervous. I just started ripping source (3 seasons, 12-13 episodes) and I'm still not entirely sure I have settled on a song. Hopefully this board will inspire me to keep plugging away at it and I'll get something working. *gnaws on lip*

So I'm going to share something that I learned last year and have tried to put into practice this year about festivids:
You are not actually making someone elses vid for them. I *thought* that's what festivids was, just like an auction or whatever, but it's really not and in any case you *can't* do that, you can only make your own vids. This is totally fine.
You see, Festivids is about sharing the love - it's about seeing that someone loves this source and has made a vid they were excited about and wanted to make and omg look at this vid! to that thing that I like! omg!
That's festivids. The notes are truly just guidelines. On the day when we all get to watch the vids made for us and the vids made for everyone else it will really all just about about how magic it is that these presents even exist and look at the fondness with which they were made.
So don't overthink what they want - they probably don't really know anyway, they just want to share the love.

Hi absolutedestiny! I agree with you in 100%. Well said! Festivids is about sharing the love in the first place! And having fun, for vidders and vid-watchers equally! Did I say LOVE?
missbreeze: don't worry about your gift vid, just do what you want, it will be fine, I'm sure.

All the Dear Festividder posts that start with 'do what you want!' aren't just making it up. It's all about the love. Love of vidding. Love of small/no fandom sources. Love of this collective experience of making and sharing those vids. LOVE. LOVE. LOVE. All you need is love.

LOVE. LOVE. LOVE. All you need is love. Was anyone else's first thought "Love Actually"? No? Not anyone? Just me then?

This is a great conversation to have, because I had my own private freakout about it the other day (as Eunice can attest to, LOL).
On one hand, there's the vid my recipient has suggested I make, which I have a song for but am doubting my ability to actually pull it off, and then there's this dreadful idea of my own for the same fandom, which is nothing like the request but I know I will make a much better job of it because it better fits the way I vid. So I need to ask myself, does my recipient want a better vid, or one closer to the brief that might be a bit crap?
I know if it were me I'd want the better vid. But because I am a complete sucker for trying to please everyone all the time, I am starting both projects, and at some point I'll make a call on which is going better and that's the one that will get made.
