obsessive24 - That pretty much sums it up. I started because I liked the song so much and it was fun to do but now I'm like "what's the point?", so I probably won't finish it, even though I sometimes like to take another look at it, mostly because I wanna wallow a bit in Sam&Dean... But there are so many vid ideas I'm more excited about anyway Then again I also made a McKay&Sheppard vid recently and there are many many out there already but I had fun making it and people enjoyed it, however cortrary to the SPN vid the SGA one felt "right", so that was different even though the circumstances were similar.

lillythekid But of course people are still churning out S/D vids and I have to admit I'm curious as to the mindset, because I'm personally so far from it. obsessive24 - I think this is where the whole "vidding is my fandom" and "my fandom is my fandom" mindsets diverge. You use "churning out" like they are ho-hum (which I understand they are, for people who are not invested in the relationship) but if you are in fandom for the relationship, and the relationship changes and grows every week (or even if it doesn't, because the show is over, but you find new things to say about it) then there are always new vids to be made and loved by other fans of the pairing. I tend to get invested in characters and stay in one fandom for 5-10 years, though, so I understand my level of, uh, interest may be unusual. All this by way of saying that I still click on and gladly watch every Sam/Dean (and Duncan/Methos) vid I see.

Killa -- I think I am that way about watching vids, but not so much making them. If I have that kind of love for a character/pairing/show I will gleefully watch (and love) every variation on a vid that can be made from them. But when it comes to starting my own vids, I'll go into a 'what can I possibly say about them that hasn't already been said' funk...even though I know in my head that it doesn't work like that from the audience side of things.
Which is one of the reasons I tend to not watch vids at all in fandoms I plan on/want to vid myself, so I can avoid that mindset. Which ends up meaning missing really awesome vids then, so that kind of sucks.

Eunice - I hear you. I think it partly depends on how much source there is. (For example, I'd have to be REALLY taken by a song to make another Paul/Alva Miracles vid, because I know for a fact that I used 98% of the usable clips in the show making one of them.) But SPN is in the middle of its 7th season, so it's not like there's a dearth of clips and richness of on-screen characterization/action/emotion/subtext. For me it also partly depends on the song. If the song is a perfect fit, and has a unique rhythm or musical style, that helps a lot. If it's not exactly perfect, and I know other vids for my pairing/character exist, I'll sometimes let a vid die on the vine.

is it an ensemble FNL vid, or character-centric? I know we've talked before about focussing on narrative and emotion and it would be really good kind of source to use for that. It's a Smash vid. I basically got to his exit in 3x04 and was all "NOOOO DON'T LEAVE." And then I went looking for Smash vids and found like, nothing. So I decided to make a vid instead of finishing the season (which leaves me with this random hole in my FNL viewing given that I've already seen seasons 4 and 5, lol). And yes, I'm definitely prioritizing narrative wayyyy above musicality, which is a bit painful, heh. If I have that kind of love for a character/pairing/show I will gleefully watch (and love) every variation on a vid that can be made from them. But when it comes to starting my own vids, I'll go into a 'what can I possibly say about them that hasn't already been said' funk... Ditto. Sometimes I wish I could go back to the early days when I would just repeatedly vid whatever my heart desired but it's probably best that I don't flood the internet with a million Spider-Man vids, haha.

dragonchic - Omg I would totally love a Smash vid. I just finished watching the 4th season, and it's great, but I really miss Smash. His exit was amazing and I cried (I don't cry easily from tv shows) and just... yes. Lots of love for Smash.

legolineI keep pushing that one off, though, because I'm so new at vidding and feel like I haven't really gotten a feel for narrative and the like yet, and I don't want to screw the vid up. I love the source material though and I think I've found a song to go with it, so that's good...I suppose? ;-) I feel almost exactly the same way! I was working on my first ever vid when I signed up for Festivids and kind of hoping the two would end up being the same. I didn't match for that source, though, and then wasn't sure what to do--finish the first vid or go straight into the Festivid? I ended up deciding to try and at least get a first draft of the first vid done (partly since, ah, my computer does not have space for two sets of source) as a kind of practice round. I really don't want to flake out on my recipient, though

dragonchic - A Smash vid?!? AWESOME! I am so looking forward to that (and it'll be a FNL vid I can watch knowing I won't get spoiled for later seasons; we haven't started s4 yet). \o/ But when it comes to starting my own vids, I'll go into a 'what can I possibly say about them that hasn't already been said' funk...even though I know in my head that it doesn't work like that from the audience side of things. That, plus I also start feeling like all the best shots are already overused, which is a bit stifling. I mean, I try not to re-use clips from one vid to another if I can help it, but seeing them over and over in other people's vids totally gives me that "Why am I bothering?" feeling. /o\ This is why I can't watch other people's White Collar vids. :-/

I love anticipating videos. As for me, I am currently not working on anything actively. But I really think my next video is going to be a 'the Doctor is sort of scary' video to Red Right Hand.

I listen to the song a lot (have been doing that) to figure out when to start new chunks and what the narrative is supposed to be like when, and then I make notes etc. Hm. First draft. I should probably try that one out *fail*

From the way you describe your process, I'd say you're doing it already. I mean, for me "first draft" means the moment I get a full timeline of clips, and I hit export and then sit there and go, "hee, first draft done!" And then I watch it and go because it's crap, and then I tweak it and move bits around, sometimes making significant changes but sometimes not, and I might call various exports down the line 2nd and 3rd and 4th drafts, and eventually somewhere down the line it becomes the final version. dragonchic - I thought about doing a Smash vid once to Snoop Dogg's cover of We Are the Champions. Then I never did. But, it's weird, just over the last day or so reading the off-topic thread, it's like I have this different view of FNL from everybody else that I never realised. As for me, I am currently not working on anything actively. But I really think my next video is going to be a 'the Doctor is sort of scary' video to Red Right Hand. I love that song! That would be brilliant to see. Will it be multi-doctor or concentrate on one incarnation?

Obsessive24 Spike & Drusilla, it's been on the 'to do list' for so long now. But I kind of promised myself I'd tackle more relationship vids this year.
