As I said in another post, I am not new per say, I just have had a bit of trouble finding time for vids with rl. Now I am less stressed but it is hard to get back in coz all my old hang-outs are dead, everyone I know has gone and there is almost nowhere to showcase work

xitsmymindx – out of interest, what were your old hangouts? Do you mainly make AMVs or live action vids? What fandoms are you in?

obsessive24 my 'hangouts' were mostly award sites which are now dead. And a couple vidding comms on LJ that are still around but it seems hardly anyone comments ever. I was also big for a time on a couple anime music video forums.
I guess you could say my videos change a lot as time goes on. I used to love Johnny Depp so I did a lotta vids with his movies, then I was big into anime so it was mostly amv's (about the time I started to notice a lot of videos with just random clips shoved together any old how), then I started to love Final Fantasy so I did lots of vids with that. Now, most of my vids are Japanese shows or movies and Charmed xD

Yeah, I've definitely noticed the dropoff in awards sites in recent years. There were so many a few years ago, but I guess the trouble with awards sites is that they take so much time to maintain, especially if the rounds are back to back. Nowadays I can only think of three that I would actively participate in, and I am a judge at two of them, so heh. ;D

I only ever found like 2 recently. I wouldn't even ~need~ award sites per say, I just would like some feedback

I was a fanfic writer before I was a vidder, and I had a really great beta reader who was kind of like a mentor to me. She was a far better writer than me, and helped me avoid the pitfalls of a young teen starting out in the world of fanfic. This is what I have really been missing as I started out vidding. I mentioned in my 'intro' post, I feel like I've been vidding in a bubble. I've read and read as much about the 'art' for want of a better word of vidding - the 'aesthetics and storytelling techniques and so forth' that you talk about. And I've watched and watched many different types of vids, and read other people's comments and tried to learn. But this kind of, second hand way of learning is so far inferior to having, as you say, a mentor to guide you personally. I agree with this
