Okay, so finding a beta can be hard! Understanding how to beta is hard!
So I figured a thread where we can both ask for a beta hookup if needed and talk about what goes into beta, how to do it, how to receive it, different beta styles etc. might be in order.
And maybe if there are any brave souls who want to go up for public beta so we can go through the process for everyone to see as well.

Brilliant idea! And I'm totally for the public beta process too, that would be very illuminating. (I'm assuming you mean the actual beta input process should probably only be constrained to maybe one or two betas, even though everyone will be able to see it? Just thinking in terms of, the more betas you have, the more conflicting opinions you're gonna get, and it might become confusing if everyone started chipping in...)

You're a genius. Thank you!
I'm thrilled about the idea of doing a public beta and also about discussing doing a beta etc. :-)

I'm really interested to see the beta process broken down. One of the reasons I'm an absolute crap beta is I end up freezing up on the distinction between what I would do, as opposed to what the vidder is trying to do.
And for me, the very best betas are very, very good at distinguishing that and stepping back and identifying the changes that would serve the vidders vision. Even something that seems as straightforward as timing...well, the question of whether to cut on the one or the three, or how to utilize the impact of a cymbal crash are very often questions of artistic leeway and not technical.
Being able to get in someone else's head is hard!

We def finitely need a place to find/offer beta assistance and discuss the process. I also love the idea of a transparent beta project, but I'm anticipating that it might be hard to find somebody to offer up their vid for that. Given that this is a semi-public space, it might also need some more ground rules? Or not. I know I'd be up to offer beta in that way, but I would be reluctant to submit my vid to it, because half my flist seems to be here as well, at least as lurkers, and I really prefer to stun people with the final, polished version of my vid (hasn't happened yet, but a girl can dream ;D) rather than everybody remembering the ugly steps along the way....

Oh don't worry, chances are next time I have a full timeline I'll want to post it up here for public dissection. ;D

Okay, so finding a beta can be hard! Yes! I've tried finding a beta several times, often with poor success. Sometimes all I get are nice comments, like "I like it" that are supportive but pretty useless. I've only had two really good betas, one in particular was fantastic at understanding what I was trying to do and had fantastic suggestions.

I like all these ideas! A public beta seems like it could be really interesting.
I'm also -- and man, this is my year of teaching freshman composition at work here, I want to make ALL the handouts -- I'm currently working on a "How to Beta a Vid" checklist kind of thing that covers some of the basic questions that I ask myself when I'm working with my own or someone else's vid. Of course, most vids demand very different beta responses depending on what the vidder is aiming for (and what the beta has a good eye for!), but I thought it could be cool to have a resource for if you're looking at a vid and you're feeling stumped. Things like, have you thought about pacing? How does color/setting/etc. seem to work in the vid? What themes seem to be at the heart of this vid? Have you checked aspect ratio lately? Things like that.
Of course, this list would be pretty subjective and reflect mostly what *I* tend to think about when I watch/beta vids... but when I'm finished, I'll post it and maybe people can add to it, or offer alternate perspectives? Or maybe people could go ahead and chime in now on how they might generally approach a vid for beta/what they've done in the past? I'm curious as to how other people's approaches might differ, because I know sometimes I go REALLY IN-DEPTH about themes and structure and shit, and sometimes I give timestamps for everything, and then other times I'm like, you're golden, fix that one clip and post it.

GREAT IDEA!!!
I'd be more than happy to offer up a vid for public scrutiny and/or join in the conversation on betaing.
I think it's also good to know what kind of beta the vidder is wanting/needing/asking for. There are many different beta types.
