I'm watching 'Merlin' right now and also 'Terra Nova' as the other shows I watch are on Hiatus ('Fringe', 'Secret Circle', 'Vampire Diaries' and 'Supernatural'). Although I think I'm losing my SPN love, it pains me to say this season, I havent been able to get into it - doesn't help Misha is no longer a regular *season 4 was one of the shows best* I can't wait for the Doctor Who Christmas Special (I'm more of a Tennant Fan than a Smith fan, but I love River Song ^^) My fandom passion right now, however, that i'm constantly watching is Primeval - in particular Series 4 & 5 (Team Leader: Matt Anderson). I'd stopped watching after Douglas Henshall (Nick Cutter) left, but when Primeval returned to the UK screens I gave it another chance and fell in love with the new characters. *Fingers crossed they get the go-ahead for series 6 after the ending of series 5* I've heard alot about 'Once Upon A Time' so i'm going to check it out before the shows return in January to see what it's like

atharriordan89 my DVR was stupid on Terra Nova too, watched like 1 ep and it didn't record more so I am eagerly awaiting repeats on that too. Love Vampire Diaries and Supernatural too. SPN has just felt awkward since last season, it felt like they were trying too hard last season and I cannot decide on this season.
One Upon a Time is awesome ;D

Although I think I'm enjoying this season more than s5, which was just a loooong slog of depression. Really keen to have Cas come back though. The sole focus on Sam + Dean is just too insular for my tastes.

I finally watched Sucker Punch. SO MANY THINGS TO SAY.
Am I crazy for wanting to vid it to this? I don't even know.

Boo, I'm at work and since they block YT, I can't tell what song it is. What song is it? Sucker Punch - I read an interesting piece in which Snyder defended his choices by stating that it's intended to be completely metacommentary to the tune of - it's a story about men in the dark watching girls perform onstage, and here in the theatre, the men in the dark watching are the geeks/fanboys/ us. Which is a very interesting idea, but FWIW I don't think the execution pulled it off. At all. I mostly just found the story to be very muddled and - dare I say it? - uninteresting, for all the dragons and WWII and Samurai robots and schoolgirls and Jon Hamm. How could that be? I'm currently simultaneously rewatching seasons 1 and 4 of Smallville for a vid. Good times. ;D

Ahh, see it totally worked for me on a WHOLE bunch of levels. While at the same time I get all the criticism of it. Well, a fair amount of the criticism anyway. I think that the movie is at its core about the female experience of exploitation, and I don't think you can tell that story without showing it. It's a very Dollhouse-esque kind of dilemma in storytelling about women's experiences. It's really hard to tell a story about sexualisation without showing sexualisation, you know? There was apparently a lot of interference in the story from the production companies, and the script did a better job of getting it across. But even so I consider the film to be mostly a success for the story they wanted to tell. Emily Browning herself is a feminist, and from reading quotes from her about the movie that's exactly where she was going with the role. At the same time though, I find the whole OMG IS IT FEMINIST YES/NO TICK ONE thing really immature, as I do with a lot of really simplified versions of feminism. It's more complicated than that, and the answer is simultaneously yes, no, kind of, and it depends on who's watching. But IMO whether the show is Properly Feminist enough is one of the least interesting things someone can ask about it.

I didn't have that particular problem with Dollhouse either, even though I know some other people did. My reservation with Sucker Punch (as with Dollhouse, incidentally) is more on the storytelling side. Regardless of whether it made its meta point successfully (and I feel like I need to rewatch it with feminism goggles to answer that question), for me the narrative experience itself wasn't satisfactory. Ideally it should have worked on both textual and metatextual levels, instead of, I feel, perhaps only on the meta level by sacrificing a lot of the textual storytelling to the extent that the textual storyline wasn't really even there and doesn't really bear looking at in any detail. The fact there's no coherent narrative vehicle may itself be a meta-critique of the form from the filmmaker, but I wonder if that's (a) giving Snyder & Co too much credit, and/or (b) even if it was fully intended to be such, whether that's actually a good idea.

I hated Dollhouse quite a bit, but kept watching it by default because my S.O. was. I came to appreciate the show before it was canceled (though never learned to really like it). Sucker Punch, on the other hand, I adored. I hadn't thought about the relationship between the two. Hmm.

I totally agree with this. I guess I enjoyed the meta of it so much that I didn't feel so let down about there not really being a story. Apparently the original script didn't have a lot of the problems that the final movie does, but I guess we will never know.

Is it just me, or is Merlin just getting better and better? I'd have more to say, but right now I'm busy shouting at Casualty for epic fail of fire procedures at Holby City Hospital. Not to mention the storage of controlled drugs... :rolls eyes: Jaz

I saw The Muppets today! It was super endearing, and it reminded me how much I loved the muppets growing up. I also saw Hugo last week, which was... incredibly gorgeous. Definitely the kind of film 3D was made for.
