For one of my Astaire/Rogers vids, I basically just retold the story of several of their films in four minutes (it helps that their films all had very similar plots...), attempting to illustrate their characters' emotional journey largely through their dancing. icepixie - I just watched this vid for the first time. It's heartbreaking, and heartbreakingly beautiful! This has just rocketed to the top of my current favorites list, and I want to watch it about 100 more times. What a perfect song choice. You did such an amazing job of portraying emotion through physical movement. I want to study this and learn from it, but first I have to enjoy it a few dozen more times.

I did shift my approach to vidding a bit this year, essentially mapping out the story I want to tell in my head and then searching for a song.... That is so interesting! I'm not sure it would ever occur to me to do that. I find myself much more inspired by the song than the source; I'm more often trying to tell the story of the song in images--or really, a lot of the time I'm trying to capture the mood of the song in images--than I am trying to tell my own story. I guess that's why I wind up vidding literally quite a lot. I can see that. I've never been able to completely mentally divorce a clip from the scene it comes from, but I'd like to be able to make myself do that someday. Aw, thank you!

I had such a good time making that vid. The song mirrors the plots of the movies so nicely, and Astaire's broken rhythm choreography ensured that something visually interesting was happening on every possible beat of the song, so basically he made me look good no matter what I did.

That's a great observation, and I can see that! But I also love (and have always loved) Ginger Rogers's face, and this song really captures something about her that I love. I'd call it "jaded vulnerability," if that makes sense at all. The tone is exactly right.

The tone is exactly right. "Jaded vulnerability," yeah, that sounds about right. She's too smart and savvy to be a really ingenueish ingenue, but she's still capable of being affected by the intense emotion of dancing with Fred's characters. Which just makes the dancing even more spectacular. (Ginger's FAAAAAACE. She is so good at deploying a raised eyebrow or pout or a big, sparkly smile.)

icepixie I just watched your Astaire/Rogers vid. JOY! JOY! JOY! Thee's something about those old movies that's just completely magical. I would like to second this! I have to confess my ignorance of the source, but I was entranced by your vid. Beautiful, I'm going to show it to my Mum who will no doubt appreciate the source and the context. Me, I just loved the musicality and the dance. Wonderful

For what it's worth, if you want to see the source, YouTube has large chunks of the films up--especially the dances, which are fantastic. The movies themselves can be very silly, but if you can tolerate the silliness, they reward you with some hilarious dialogue and line deliveries.
