I've actually spent a bit of time thinking about the 1:1 nature of pairing people off. When I have some time in the next day or so (when I am not clipping, hah), I'll come back and try to elaborate upon some ideas I had or brainstormed with some other people. I'm looking forward to hear your thoughts on it, Abbey! But clipping is way more important...

Although I'm not entirely newbie at vidding, I never felt that I'm a part of any kind of vidding community. I always was lonely as a vidder, except the short period when I was at the Kawoosh forum, when it was still live. I arrived late at that party unfortunately. Hopefully this place can be a friendly evironment for oldies and newbies as well. And for middleagedbies, too. Pairing people is an interesting idea. I'm not sure how it gonna work, but maybe you can give it a try.

Valika I hope you will come here to hang out more often and not be lonely! If people are keen to try the 1:1 mentoring idea, please by all means start a new thread. Or, if you think a new board is more appropriate, lemme know and I'll start one.

*hugs valika* I hope this board is that place too! I like livejournal for a lot of reasons, but I've always felt uncomfortable there trying to meet new people or participating in discussions so I'm really excited about this board

Being a brand-newbie, I can tell you that I've never felt unwelcome anywhere - actually, everyone I've ever talked to who vids has been beyond-supportive and wonderful. I have "met" a bunch of nice people over at vidding on LJ, but I jumped right on this forum because it's a much smaller community. I feel a little lost over on vidding, tbh.
For me, the most intimidating part of learning to vid has been the technology. I'm not very science/technical-minded, and I just about tore my hair out last night trying to get WMM to work (various codec and format issues). There are all these buttons and stuff I don't understand, even on such a "basic" vidding platform. A few people have recommended Adobe Premiere, but that's even more intimidating.
Hopefully, I'll have more to contribute. For now, I'm just happy to squee over everyone else's projects.

@ voodoochild Ah, snap I'm really not the most tech savvy person either. It took me days until I'd figured out how to get files running in SonyVegas. I find SonyVegas really shiny and pretty intuitive--maybe you'll find that one easier? (I switched from WMM to SonyVegas )

voodoochild- I am very seriously considering doing a screencast video walk through of the basics of setting up and editing a vid in Premiere.
It is really, really not as complicated as it looks, but it's also hard to explain in just words so text tutorials always sound really intimidating. Like, I have been using NLEs (Premiere 6.5 back in the day, to Final Cut Pro for years and years, and now back to Premiere with CS4) since the beginning and sometimes I look at those text walkthroughs and I get scared.
Would you (or anyone else) be interested in such a thing?

Being a brand-newbie, I can tell you that I've never felt unwelcome anywhere - actually, everyone I've ever talked to who vids has been beyond-supportive and wonderful. That is honestly so lovely to hear. I think we so often hear about newbies feeling unwelcome that we don't stop to focus on when that doesn't happen to newbies, so yay! If you have absolutely no knowledge of codecs, I think a good place to start tech-wise may be to install the K-Lite codec pack. I've been vidding for years and still have no idea how codecs work, exactly, but I do know K-lite is sort of this magic pack that you install and suddenly a lot of your codec problems just go away. ;D As for software, I really get the feeling that you have to find one that is intuitive to you specifically. For me, WMM is actually a lot more complicated than Vegas or Premiere, just because of the way it's laid out. A common sentiment that seems to poke through is that while certain programs might look difficult with buttons and bells and whistles every which way, very few components are actually necessary to get started with vidding. As long as you get to the point of being able to put clips and music on the timeline, hopefully things will just start falling into place. Eunice - I for one would love to see a resource like that. Not just for newbies either; I think people who'd been vidding for a while would probably benefit from seeing someone else's process like that.

Would you (or anyone else) be interested in such a thing? Me, definitely. I'm using SV and am fairly happy with it, but I also have a version of Premiere that I'd like to try out, but I remember that Premiere seemed very daunting to me once upon a time.

eunice - Absolutely. I think a screencast or graphic tutorial would be awesome. ITA about text tutorials - they're sometimes difficult to get through.
I've installed that, as well as a few others (DIVX, XVID). One of them apparently worked, because WMM suddenly opened and had no problem.
That's what I'm hearing. I think I'll try putting together the instrumental opening to the vid in WMM, see what it looks like, and then if I feel ambitious, play around with the same sequence in Premiere or SonyVegas.

Just a quick question: is there anyone here using any Magix video editor but me? I'm still learning, I don't think I know all the possibilities and functions of my editor.
BTW, someone mentioned me once, that Magix is similar to Premiere in some degree, so I'm looking forward to this tutorial.

SCORE! The only thing standing in my way of doing this was not having a usb microphone. When I mentioned this, my son was just 'Oh, I have one with me!' (we live in the future where someone would just happen to have a usb microphone headset with them on vacation)
And he gave it to me. Probably because I went through that whole pregnancy/childbirth thing to bring him into the world. A fair trade off for a random free usb microphone headset, I think.
So, okay. As soon as I have some time to figure out the screencast software and record when I don't have family visiting, I'll get on that.

*hugs Eunice* YOu are so generous! Thank you in advance!
Family visiting could be tiring. And awesome.

No sorry, I'll keep an eye out on my f-list but I haven't heard of this software before, I'm pretty sure. "My son! My son for a USB microphone!!" <-- couldn't resist. ;D Can't wait to see/hear the tutorial!

Oh, totally. I am going to watch the tutorial if only to hear you talk. ;D I've been vidding since 2003 and still often long for a mentor of my very own, because I still feel like I know very little. Vidding is a very isolating hobby, and the only person I knew locally moved to another country *looks pointedly at obsessive24 *
