As for American music, I like more punk-ish like Goo Goo Dolls Snap! I loooooooooooooooove the Goo Goo Dolls! ;D So much I actually flew to London last November to see them perform at Brixton Academy because they only seem to do UK shows in Europe. It was amazing! ;D I even named my bluegrass mandolin "Iris" because the song has a mandolin bit However, I'm not too fond of their two latest albums. I love their stuff up to "Gutterflower" and then IMHO they drifted too much towards happy pop music. I prefer them dark and gloomy. ;D

legoline and xitsmymindx - YAY GOO GOO DOLLS LOVE. I completely agree that their earlier stuff is much better than their last two albums. Philly was lucky enough to have them play our annual Welcome America July 4th concert (an all-night thing with fireworks, free on the Ben Franklin Parkway), and my friends and I all went. We brought vegan noms, sat around Logan Fountain, and sung along to every single song.
Currently, I've been back in love again with The Gaslight Anthem. There's something about their sound and lyrics that I adore - sort of Bruce Springsteen meets scruffy-bearded-dude garage band meets jazz. They're a bit retro, but with a modern rock feel.
- This is what I'd consider their signature song, "The '59 Sound", which is super-catchy and bittersweet and they actually performed it with Bruce Springsteen at Hard Rock Calling in London two years ago. I have aspirations of vidding Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes to it one of these days.
- This is one of the more jazzy, retro numbers, called "The Diamond Church Street Choir". This is is sing-along awesome, just a really feel-good song.
- And my favorite Gaslight Anthem song, "Spirit of Jazz".

I recently got into the Puppini Sisters. I suppose this was inevitable given my taste in movies and dance, and a father who introduced me early to Glenn Miller, the Andrews Sisters, and other acts of the swing era. Their cover of "I Got Rhythm" is, I think, the best I've ever heard. Not only is the cover part really well-done, but they've written a whole new half of the song that's really excellent. I'm tempted to make a movie musical medley vid to it, but it might be better with something less...expected. Cop show action sequences, maybe? (Except I don't watch many cop shows.) Wacky hijinks from sitcoms? (Ditto.) Maybe musicals would be best. One of their original songs, " Jilted," is also fantastic. I bet it would be fun to vid, but I can't think of an appropriate subject/source.

I love the video clip for this song, and indeed the song itself. Totally waiting for an excuse to vid it. You really gotta watch it in high def.

Although actually I've never seen An American in Paris; I only just looked up the "I Got Rhythm" section on YouTube to see whether the verse I like the best was from there or by the Puppinis. I should fix this!

DHL just delivered She&Him's Christmas album ;D I love it. I really love Zooey's voice, and that retro vibe their songs have always going on.

Antje Duvekot, one of my favorite singer/songwriters, just released a new album! I've listened to "The Ballad of Fred Noonan" probably three dozen times in the past twelve hours. It's a blatant revision of history (at least, no book about Amelia Earhart I've ever read has mentioned that her navigator on the doomed round the world flight was in love with her), but it's so gorgeous that I can't bring myself to care. I think it might be my new favorite song for the moment. I feel like someone who is not me could make a really excellent vid to "Phoenix." It hits me in the same place Dar Williams's "When I was a Boy" hits me, though the topics are different. It's about a really troubled relationship between mother and daughter and the daughter kind of singing her way through the pain it causes her; I can't think of quite the right character for it, but in the right hands I bet it would be really pretty and moving. (I can't find either of these online or I'd link, but there are samples here.)

I only listened to the excerpt on amazon.de but I wonder if it would work for Lorelai and Emily Gilmore...

I only listened to the excerpt on amazon.de but I wonder if it would work for Lorelai and Emily Gilmore... Perhaps? I've only seen a couple episodes of that show, so I couldn't say. (It sounds perfect for me on paper, but somehow when I actually watch it, I can't stand it. I can't figure out why.) Maybe it's just because I've been working on Fringe vids lately, but to me the song suggests a sci-fi setting. I'd almost say it could be an Aeryn Sun vid, but her mommy issues aren't quite like what the song depicts.

www.jamesvmcmorrow.com/ James Vincent McMorrow's album Early in the Morning has been my go to album recently particularly the song We Don't Eat Also Lisa Hannigan's new album Passenger, Safe Travels (Don't Die) is my favourite song from it at the moment. Cathy Davey is another Irish singer I listen to alot at the moment. I love her. This is her singing live on an Irish tv show Other Voices. The Pierces You'll be Mine is another song I've been listening to on repeat a few times recently.

Anybody have thoughts about Lana Del Rey? She appears to be relatively new.
