I don't post my vids to YT for a lot of the reasons that have been mentioned: I don't want to worry about takedowns/audio muting, I know I wouldn't care enough to bother disputing fair use, I get what feels like a sufficient number of comments and views via LJ/DW. I also like that hosting them on Vimeo (or sometimes Viddler) and only posting them to LJ/DW/AO3 means that they're pretty much only going to be seen by people who are looking for vids as opposed to the source or the song, and there's no chance of a "lol wtf is this?" comment.
I do post all my vids to the AO3 (I copy/paste my LJ post, so it has the embed and a link to download the file on a filesharing site), mostly because I enjoy having all my stuff easily browsable and tagged by character, genre, etc., without cluttering up my own LJ tags. I've gotten a few comments here and there, but definitely not as many as I get on LJ/DW.

Franzeska - that's such an odd and interesting thing to read about Miami Vice in particular. Do you think a lot of that may come down to the age of the source, or is it really specific to this fandom that you don't get in other older fandoms? Half and half. In my experience, the longer the source and the older, the more you see those "Hey, remember how you used to love X?" videos, whether they're something we'd identify as a vid or just clips of the best bits with the original sound intact or some other kind of video. People post favorite scenes no matter what, but I feel like there's a particular type of scene compilation video and nostalgia-driven, obvious music-using vid that you get more when most people don't have the whole thing on their DVR and haven't seen the whole thing in the last couple of years. Like... if you search yt for "Buffy" and "Credits", you get a lot of other shows edited to replicate the Buffy credits. If you search for something from the 80s plus "Credits", you get the original credit sequence with no editing, especially if the source isn't out on DVD. On the other hand, Miami Vice absolutely does have a fanbase that cares far more about the score and the camerawork than average simply because that stuff is so much more obvious in MV. For example, here's the sequence from the pilot that put the show on the map. This aired in 1984 at a time when most prior tv had been brightly lit with relatively static camerawork and didn't really use rock or pop as a soundtrack. And here's a seizure-inducing scene from the beginning of the episode Little Miss Dangerous (MV's theory of episode titling: if you're going to name an episode after a song the entire song should clearly play over some scene in it and the episode plot should directly follow the song). Check out the neon right at the beginning: And any time we return to the theme of anyone's dead relatives, it's music video time again. Here, for example: Also any time any buddy cop has to choose between a partner and a relationship, we get a slash vid. Check out how it goes from dissolves and slower editing at the beginning to plain cuts and faster repetition at the end: I'm sure there are earlier examples of movies that look like that, but tv really didn't until after Miami Vice, and even the ubiquitous 80s action movie training montage is mostly from post-1984.

Since noiproksa pointed out that YT feels like fanfiction.net for fanfics--what about AO3 then? Do any of you post your vids there? I've posted a couple of things. I like it because of the tagging and the ease of finding things long after they're posted. I've only gotten a few comments and kudos, but they were more than I expected. I haven't gotten my head around how AO3 works yet. Do you post there and people can comment directly? Or does it link back to your LJ post or whatever? Yes, you embed directly on AO3. If you want all your comments on LJ, there's no reason to post to AO3, though you could bookmark your lj posts as "external works". (Searching/browsing and tags for bookmarks on AO3 are... definitely in beta. I expect this feature to be more attractive in the future, but I don't think it's that great right now.) A link to something outside of AO3 without any art/video/sound embedded and without a story is not really a "fanwork" in and of itself. If you made a "work" like that on AO3 (as opposed to a bookmark) and someone reported you, Abuse could ask you to delete it.

I used a template to fight my takedown. Sorry, on my phone right now, to lazy to try and quote, but it might have also helped that AFP broke free of her record label last year(?), so maybe they don't actually have the rights to the song anymore? No clue. Both my other videos on YouTube are blocked in Germany, and I haven't gotten around to really fighting that yet.

I used to post to youtube and most comments were fandom related and positive. I took most of my vids down when I got a copyright infringement notice. This was before they cut sound or blocked videos. As far as fighting it; I did ask who was claiming copyright since the Producers for the show encouraged us to make vids and asked for links so they could see them and I had also edited the music to shorten it. Turned out it was a company hired for the music industry and since I had no way of contacting the artist for permission I just took it down. I also took down all my vids that had music in them since Youtube had started sending out a lot of notices to everyone.
I did leave non-music video that I had edited from hours long permitted convention video up until it was brought to my attention that the actress didn't like video posted without her permission. I promptly took them down since I respect the actress' wishes. I do have to constantly check because those videos were copied and every year, one or two people post them up and I politely asked them to take down. Youtube's policy isn't very good about following through with reports so I have found this easier and most take them down. I've only had one, after she told me that she downloaded it from another site and uploaded it there, that put up a fuss and actually wanted me to prove it was mine. .
I didn't realize AO3 had the video section live.....I'll have to check that out. Right now I just have my vids at a file sharing site that also streams videos and I hardly get any comments there but do get them where I've posted the link on a forum.

I didn't realize AO3 had the video section live. It does and it doesn't. AO3 doesn't have video hosting live yet. It switched to allowing embeds a while ago, and people have started using it for that. I like it because it's easier to search old posts on an archive than on a journal.

I've never posted to youtube. I prefer a fandom based viewership. My vids tend to be those living room vids so I doubt many people would be interested. Also my fandoms are thirty plus years old, not the new, shiny, pretty shows. In my fandoms, we're just glad we have episodes that are viewable! ;D

katbyrd - have you checked YouTube to see if there are any in your fandom already posted? There might be a vid void just waiting to be filled!

katbyrd - have you checked YouTube to see if there are any in your fandom already posted? There might be a vid void just waiting to be filled! Yes, there are vidders in my fandoms who regular post to YT and like today, they're regularly blocked! I do prefer posting on my LJ and Yahoo comms when I do a vid. I like sharing them with friends most of all.

The blocking is so frustrating. Although most of mine are advert infested, only two or three are actually blocked.
Sharing with friends is the best of all.

Let us know how you get on, Jackie! The conversation here has actually convinced me the other way, that I really can't be arsed giving YT another try. ;D

Good luck Jackie.
I can understand that Nicky - In the last few days a discussion about Mozart (based on a fictional representation in 'Amadeus' which they seem to treat as fact) has struck up on my vid post, I feel like telling them to take it elsewhere. If it gets heated I'm just going to block comments altogether. That said this is the first time it has happened.

Hehe, I feel your pain. Disabling comments seems just the kind of passive-aggressive (or maybe just aggressive?) thing I'd do. ;D

Perhaps the interwebs (youtube especially) brings out the worst in me ;-)
I get more intolerant as I get older. Grumpy old vidder syndrome.
