Ladies, please come closer for a group-hug!!! Particularly legoline for asking the question, and Nicky for having a no-nonsense, uncomplicated answer.
After vidding with downloaded episodes for donkeys (and having perfected my technique to a t) I've now ventured into the dvd ripping terretory, because the shiny, I want it too! And as to be expected I run into trouble quite quickly. I was just about to post my woes when I decided to read the Vidding for Dummies thread as well, and voila, the first few posts set me on my way to figure out a system that works for me.
*group-hug*

I have two semi-techish questions, both related to posting vids on the internet.
1. I've noticed many vidders post downloadable vids on an LJ entry. If you do this, do you actually upload the file to LJ itself (via a paid account I assume?), or do you use a different hosting service and just post a link on LJ? If it's the latter, what hosting services do you recommend?
2. I've also noticed most vidders password protect vids posted on Vimeo, and I have followed suit. But I don't actually know the reason for doing this. Does it have anything to do with Vimeo's rule against fanvids? Or is it something else?
Thanks all!

There are a lot of different ways how you could go about it. You can use Vimeo, BAM video vault or even youtube and than stream from there. If you want to offer download links you can either use a service like sendspace or a webpage. All ways have pros and cons, I'd say. If you rely on other services you might potentially get bitten (e.g. megauploud closure, copyright claims, rules regarding content), but they are (mostly) free and you don't really need any tech know-how. I went for my own web page, because I like to be inedependant and flexible, but it costs a bit of money and you need to learn some basic coding.
In terms of pass word protection I can't really help you because I don't do that. I don't know whether people think it protecting them from copy right claims, or whether they just don't want others to see their vids. Personally I am not very concerned about those things, but maybe I should? I'm sure somebody who uses those services will be able to offer a better answer.

Thanks! I finally figured out how to embed Vimeo pages this morning, but as a viewer I like the option of downloading vids. I love my ever-growing folder (titled "Inspiration") of other vidders' work. It allows for easy rewatch without finding the webpage. It sounds like I'll need to get my own site for that, then.

Most of us password-protect at Vimeo because Vimeo is known to take down infringing content and suspending accounts. I've heard of it happening even with password protected videos, but at least that happens less often. And since Vimeo is one of the better streaming sites out there in terms of image clarity, framerate etc, we try not to get our accounts suspended if we can help it. (That said, anyone else notice recently that Vimeo's default framerate seems to have gone down? My vids look all jerky now. ) If you don't want to fork out for your own web space, Mediafire is generally pretty good for a downloadable link. It expires after a while if there's no activity, though.

I've been wondering about the password protection on Vimeo as well. I do it too, but, I mean, private or unlisted videos on youtube get blocked too, right? So maybe it wouldn't make much of a difference. But I still feel safer when I protect them.
Also I'm thinking about making a new livejournal or tumblr for my videos. I'm curious, how did you guys start out in the vidding community? In terms of gaining loyal viewers, etc? I feel like it's really hard for new vidders to get some recognition, since there are so many people doing it these days.
Somewhat relatedly, are any of you registered at vidders.net? I signed up a few weeks ago and they still haven't approved my account. Is that community even active anymore?

I started a few years ago, community-wise first by entering vids on the awards circuits, and then starting an LJ soon after that and pimping to the usual suspects like the Vidding comm on LJ. Both of these avenues (awards circuit, LJ) have really dried up in terms of viewership/comment count over the last couple of years, though. I'm not sure where the new vidders are migrating to. Tumblr, maybe? Or probably just YT, even though I don't feel like there's much of a sense of "vidding community" on YT.
I personally don't think there's really such a thing as a "loyal viewer". It's very fandom-driven. Even when I know I love someone's work, I probably wouldn't watch one of their vids that I don't know the fandom for. But I do have people who friend my LJ for the vids, so maybe that counts, but as I said, comment count has really dropped over the last couple of years. I don't know if they are still watching but just not commenting, or whether viewership itself has dropped.
I don't know if Vidders.net is still being maintained. It's been pretty quiet for the last few years, iirc. In its previous life it was Imeem, which was a lot of LJ vidders' preferred streaming provider for a while. And then Imeem died and a lot of us migrated to Vimeo. And then Imeem was rescued by some nice people and rebranded as Vidders.net, but to my memory it never really went into full revival mode.

Vidders.net was originally BamVidVault privately set up on Ning network. It's still going (just) but they are slow to update accounts and approve vids. I think one of the admins - Holdt, was ill and probably they are struggling to keep up with things. If they updated more frequently it may encourage people to use the site. They've had the same featured video there for nearly two months so it's a little off putting.
I haven't watched any of my vids on vimeo lately - so I haven't noticed the drop off in quality. I do post new vids on tumblr but they get even less response than LJ. I've found a blog on tumblr called fyeahfanvids which will take vid recommendations for posting but it's predominately youtube vids with the occasional vimeo one thrown in. It may be worth putting in some of your own vids to this blog -as long as you have an embed they can post.

Did I confuse Bam with Imeem? I apologise. Can't keep the old networks straight in my head!

That's good to know about vidders.net. It sounds like it could be such a useful site if there were more frequent updates. I wish I would have gotten into vidding a couple years earlier!

@obsessive24 Hardly surprising really considering how many come and go...
@kali I always wished I got into vidding earlier - By the time I started vidding the whedonverse so many vids were around. One time I'd like to start with a new fandom that's really buzzing but I guess I'm too slow for that.

thedothatgirl, that's exactly the same for me too, with both the Whedonverse and other shows. I think Dollhouse is the only show ever in my life that I watched within ~two years of it first starting to air. And it took three years of Buffy fannishness before I took up vidding. Oh well, I'm glad there is vidpub! And hopefully someday I will get to VividCon.

I watched Buffy, Angel and Firefly in real time but never knew about fanvids until Summer 2003 just before Angel hit Season 5 - late to the vidparty to be sure.
Yeah it would be cool to go to VividCon - perhaps we'll have another VidUkon here too. That was fun.
