I've been to MW for years and I've shown vids there for the past five years. It's trying. I only show them because friends ask me to. I have considered boycotting it many times but somebody always takes a pokey-stick to me... I probably need an intevention. Ha ha ha. Well, this year, you and I can both need an intervention.

The convention is filled with lots or programming and events. The biggest barrier for me entering vids has been: the segregation of slash vids, the contest concept (not my thing, but many vidders like awards) and the requirement that you be present to put in the volunteer hours. They made an exception for me one year and allowed one of my vids to be shown with an attending vidder doing my volunteer hours for me. The "in person" requirement effectively shut themselves out from the larger portion of the vidding submissions. This wasn't an issue when they had lots of vidders attending, but vidding is specialized and attendance is dropping. You cannot rely on the website as it not reliably updated. They have a blog but very little discussion about the vid show. I get the impression that the person running the vid show is tired and not enthused? You can PM canellfan a fellow vidder (or leave a comment in his LJ). He's been the only one providing lists of what vids have been shown at MediaWest and knows the organizers. Thanks, morgandawn! I've seen canellfan's posts on LJ and mailing list archives, but he never reviews the slash vids, so I was curious to see what other people thought too. I can't decide whether to bother bringing anything besides slash. MWC is definitely one of the harder cons to research online. (And they wonder why they don't get more new people! Sheesh!)

I saw a mention of MWC being a premieres-only show on Fanlore, so I e-mailed the coordinator, who said: "It's for videos that have never been seen at MediaWestCon before. It would be nice if *all* videos were truly premieres (except for producers showing a few friends, of course) -- but those days are long past."
I am amused at that phrasing. Not that it's easy to send vids there if you aren't attending, but just in case anyone else looks at those guidelines and wonders the same thing, that's the official word.

Okay... considering every vid I've ever shown there wasn't made for MW. My first con each year is usually Revelcon and I show any new vids there since it's well... my first con of the year.
