I'm wading through the Media West vid contest guidelines and rolling my eyes. Has anybody shown vids there? Any suggestions on what sorts of things to send?

I somehow thought Media West was way old and no longer going anymore, but that was just a random opinion based on no facts whatsoever. Link us to the guidelines please?

I'm wading through the Media West vid contest guidelines and rolling my eyes. Has anybody shown vids there? Any suggestions on what sorts of things to send? I've never been to MW, but heard many tales. I'm not sure how much it's changed in recent years, but it used to be that the "vid show" was actually more of an ongoing vid room, where vids played for many hours. They used to (do they still?) put the slash vids at the end of the night, so the kiddies wouldn't be exposed to them. The vids that traditionally won the awards were the big comedy, crowd-pleasing type con vids. If you go, please report back! I haven't heard much about this con in years, and I'm curious.

Their website is just embarrassing, and every year, there are people going "Guys, please advertise if you want younger fans to attend," but they haven't as yet. I only really heard about MWC after getting interested in zines, since that's the only part of fandom where you actually hear about it online. Here is the front page of their eyeball-destroying 90's web shrine. And here are the details of their vid contest. From what I've seen online, they've been relaxing the requirements for entry a bit because they got so few vids in 2009 and 2010. It's such an old con that I really want to go at least once just to see what it's like, and I figure why not bring some vids, but... sheesh. They used to (do they still?) put the slash vids at the end of the night, so the kiddies wouldn't be exposed to them. Oh yes. They still do that. It makes me want to vid something really violent but not slashy and stick it in the gen show. I'm going next spring, so I'll definitely report back.

VHS accepted! Nice. ;D
Looking over the contest criteria, it doesn't really look like my cup of tea. The elements judged don't really resonate with me and my kind of vidding/vid watching, but I guess that's sort of expected given - can I say "generational gap"? I wanna say generational gap.

Here is the front page of their eyeball-destroying 90's web shrine. Whut. Wow. I think the Guardian of Forever is supposed to indicate that you've just taken the web wayback machine. I feel like I've been noncon time-traveled!

That is the best description I've ever seen of what's wrong with their site. (I've been thinking of attending for a couple of years and kept getting turned off by the room lottery/the location/the dumb policies. But I have friends going, so...) I keep wanting to send them feedback, but they must have heard it all a million times by now, and the site still looks like that.

Hm, to me that looks like an odd set of categories but Nicky's probably right in that it reflects a difference in community preferences (not necessarily a generational gap IMO since I think song interpretation is highly valued in some younger communities too).

Ha ha ha. Yeah, lots of the info actually is up to date, but I can never believe it is because... well, you saw the site.

You know... when you were all describing the site, I totally imagined an Angelfire website before I even clicked on it, and I hoped I would be wrong. My imagination has never been so deadly accurate.

I was like "LOL Geocities" when I first saw it, but your classic internet-fu is superior to mine. Because to the extent that there were distinct flavors of 90's web shrine, this one is totally Angelfire. (La la la, I am so on-topic. La la la.)

I agree with it being more Angelfire than Geocities. Angelfire has more annoying backgrounds, and geocities had more animated men at work signs.

I've been to MW for years and I've shown vids there for the past five years. It's trying. I only show them because friends ask me to. I have considered boycotting it many times but somebody always takes a pokey-stick to me... I probably need an intevention.
