I also wonder if the fact that I often work with movies (one-shots, or at most, a trilogy) has anything to do with it. With limited source I think it's less often you can do the kinds of really complex narratives that merit longer vids, at least compared to multi-season TV series. That's a good point. I think it also matters how you approach multi-season TV series. Like with your Smash vid or the Lois/Clark vid, even though you're sourcing from a lot of source, the specific subject matter of the vids forces them to be not long. Well, not "forces". More like what you said, about not being indulgent and being able to say what you need to say in 4 minutes so why not keep it to that. Off the top of my head I've had 3 vids that went over 4:30, and one of those above 5:00. One was a complicated BSG ensemble clusterfuck, but the other two, interestingly enough, were films. I felt like the length was justified because I needed time to let the emotional content breathe. The clips were possibly on average longer than my usual clip choice/cutting.

I guess in the end it all boils down to the story you want to tell having enough meat and layers to keep the viewer's interest for more than four minutes.
