Anyone keen to talk about general health and fitness?
I was really fit around this time last year. I was seeing a personal trainer two or three times a week and doing a lot of cardio, weights and circuits. I've been slowly doing less and less since coming to the UK - even though I still go to the gym at least two or three times a week, it's mostly just to use the elliptical machine. And yesterday I decided to do a bit of resistance exercise and found I was SO WEAK omg, with like no core strength left. Boos!! But at least now I feel motivated to start properly exercising again. ;D

I've been planning to work on this over the holidays! I've never regularly exercised, just spurts of it here and there. I have severe sport-induced asthma and like no muscle strength or stamina, so my options are limited. I'm going to try to just do resistance stuff, it's the only kind of exercise I can really do. But I'm determined to do it this time! I'm also considering going back on a low-carb diet, but either way I'm going to cut down on the junk food. I've been eating my stress all year, getting into bad habits, and I've had schedule problems that have made it really difficult NOT to eat bought meals at uni. But no more! For almost definitely sure maybe!

We must all motivate each other! I'm trying to cut down on bad foods too, but first I gotta buy a big bag of nuts for my office desk, otherwise I run to the vending machine without fail at 4pm. ;D gnat -Resistance exercise is my favourite, I have to say. It's harder to get motivated for it IMO, but it burns fat better than cardio, plus you can really feel it the next day. ;D

I'm just naturally lazy That and even as a child, I was never good at sports. I was always the slowest and the weakest, even as a kid when I hadn't yet started to put on weight. I did competetive sports all through my teen years--rowing, then judo--but I was never good at anything. The joy of sports and fitness totally escapes me I love swimming, but the nearest pool is about a twenty-minute drive from here. Boo.

Does jumping up and down on the couch during basketball games count as exercise? If so I am in great shape. ;D

I just recently joined Fitocracy, which is this site that kind of gamifies fitness so nerds can understand it. It even has its own xkcd comic ( xkcd.com/940/). I don't know how much use I'll actually get out of it, but it's totally the thought that counts when it comes to exercise, right? Anyway it's invite-only, so if anybody is interested I can get you an invite.

LOL, I can't understand how it works! But the concept sounds cool. ;D
I've made a new resolution today. On the first step to regaining fitness, I will do 20 push-ups every day! Regardless of whether I'm doing other things at the gym. I've also just changed my gym branch to one that has more classes, so I'm gonna try and start up pilates again, and also try out the street dance class. I've been wanting to do street dance for ages but just haven't found a good class for it.

I did a push-up program about a year and a half ago - 6 weeks to a hundred push ups. My wrists wouldn't last past about 40, but it's a pretty solid program. Now I have a very effective motivational system for regular exercise. My satellite dish stops getting reception from local stations when it gets below about 40 degrees (which started weeks ago here in Wisconsin), so if I want to watch a show, I have to go to the gym and stay on the elliptical machine for the entire hour. I could call Direct TV and have them fix the dish, but then I might stop going to the gym...

Yeah, me and my roommate live in WI and do that whenever we lose power xD Like "ok, we're cold and need TV, LET'S GO TO THE GYM!"

I've always been one of those people that stayed skinny despite a massive Mountain Dew addiction (seriously, it's really bad, as in it's pretty much all I drink), not working out. But this past six month I have gained almost 20 lbs, despite not like...changing anything. So I am trying to quit the soda, which is scary hard and I have no will power. I should also quit my other really nasty habit (which will likely cause me to gain even more weight, the quitting anyhow, again with the willpower). I started trying to run on the treadmill a bit, but after a week my ankle starts swelling and I have to quit, only to do it again when I start again and grrr. I am looking into options lol
Edited to add: I am 5'9, and went from a steady 145 to almost 170. Its very weird. I am getting old wah

Huh! That is very odd. It could just be aging, as you said, although that's quite a lot of weight gain for no lifestyle change at all. Have you seen a GP?
Treadmills are the devil's work. I know jogging is supposed to be the no. 1 fat burner, but my joints refuse to do it and so do I. Have you tried some gentle resistance exercises, light weights etc? Building up some muscle mass is good for burning fat in the long run, plus just a general good idea as you get older, I think.
M and I have a deal where he will do 5 push-ups for every one of mine. So for the last couple of days he had to do 100 push-ups a day. ;D He needs the exercise too.
I booked onto a street dance class at the gym today. Hope it's fun.
