DistractionFandom: Star Trek (2009) Spoilers: For the whole film Song / Artist: The Black Pearl - Klaus Badelt Duration: 1:54 Notes: This is a vid I made for a friend who was going through a difficult time. I felt pretty useless, being hundreds of miles away, so put together this little vid as a little 'distraction' for her. My motto for that week was, when there's nothing you can do to help, vid. This is my third vid and the first I am sharing beyond my LJ flist. While this vid wasn't made with any high ideal in mind, I welcome any thoughts, feedback and constructive criticism. So far I have been vidding solo and I know that in order to improve I need feedback from those who have gone before Streaming at Vimeo Password is cassini Jaz

Ooooh. I enjoyed this overall--interesting choice of music.
I thought the vid was really, really cool when you focused on the slightly "darker" scenes, the gritty and drama stuff. There was a sense of impending doom that I really loved. However, I felt like some of the lighter scenes (like Kirk doing the mock shooting with his fingers and him patting Spock's shoulder) were too light-hearted and kind of...broke the mood during those scenes for me. They sort of disrupted the overall epic tone.

Hi legolineThanks so much for watching, and commenting so soon! I'm interested to read how you felt there was a sense of impending doom, and I can totally see that the 'lighter' moments might break that mood. I think I was going for epic in the sense of doom and drama and angst, but also epic in terms of comedy in the face of all this... if that makes any sense! Lol! One of the things I love about this film is how far away Kirk starts from where he ends up. He spends such a lot of time running around comically (with giant hands, or being chased by giant aliens) that I felt this was embedded with the epic-ness. In the end they triumphed, despite or perhaps because of the comedy along the way. Jaz

I think it's super challenging to vid without the aid of lyrics. You did a fantastic job, better than I could have done.

Hi Nos Thank you so much for your kind comment! This is the first vid I've made without lyrics. My first two were very much lyric focused with the lyrics driving the story, so I was a bit concerned how I would work without them. I really enjoyed making this though, and it's given me the confidence to vid tracks without lyrics in the future. Jaz

Glad to see that Vimeo seems to be working out for you Jaz! I agree it's harder to vid instrumental than lyric-y songs, and I think you did a wonderful job here. The way you timed the editing to the natural pacing in the music seems also very intuitive, which is always really cool to see. (I always think some people seem to naturally get the music whereas some don't, so much, and in this case I really feel your feel of the music here.) Especially liked the smash cut to the odometer at 0:38 and how that bit built up. Don't know how much you intended the moment at 0:48 but that really struck me as a beautifully nuanced moment of musicality, the way the structure rushes past on the left hand side perfectly echoes the movement of the strings on the music there. ZOMG love Sulu's hero moment at 0:54! Personally, I quite liked the mixture of drama and light comedy. That's the way the source itself was presented so I didn't really feel a disconnect between that and how the vid came across. Concrit - not much comes to mind, tbh. Some of that is because obviously this is quite a straightforward vid based on the way the plot played out, so I don't have much to say in terms of structure and narrative; the editing I thought was really enjoyable. I did spot one stray frame at 1:01 (a brief flash of Spock) so maybe keep an eye out for those? Overall, I really enjoyed this and look forward to seeing more of your vids.

Hi legolineI think I was going for epic in the sense of doom and drama and angst, but also epic in terms of comedy in the face of all this... if that makes any sense! Definitely makes sense I guess I'm just such an addict for angst that I automatically latch on to it and go, "Bzuh?" at the lighter moments :-) Still, very cool vid! Good job

Glad to see that Vimeo seems to be working out for you Jaz! Yay! It totally is! And now of course I'm wondering why it took me so long - sometimes I guess you just need a push in the right direction I agree it's harder to vid instrumental than lyric-y songs, and I think you did a wonderful job here. The way you timed the editing to the natural pacing in the music seems also very intuitive, which is always really cool to see. (I always think some people seem to naturally get the music whereas some don't, so much, and in this case I really feel your feel of the music here.) Thank you! This is a track I have listened to about a million times. It's been on my playlist for a looong time, just as a cool track to listen to, and then when I was looking for something short to vid for my friend, there it was, all along I think the best piece of advice I had about the music part of the vid was to listen and listen and listen again, and I'm glad it worked here! Especially liked the smash cut to the odometer at 0:38 and how that bit built up. That was one of the clips I had in my mind before I started the vid, once that was down I knew I was on my way! It sounds obvious, but the idea of using a clip that doesn't contain a character or a landscape, but is a clip of a 'thing' or an 'object', didn't occur to me for a long time! It was only when I was doing a Torchwood vid for Tosh that I really realised it, and that was only because I was struggling to find the clips I needed for a secondary character. It's great how something like that, that's not working out, can lead you to discover something new Don't know how much you intended the moment at 0:48 but that really struck me as a beautifully nuanced moment of musicality, the way the structure rushes past on the left hand side perfectly echoes the movement of the strings on the music there. Wow, oh I'm so glad this works. I struggled and struggled with this section, getting the cuts and the motion within the clips right. This is by far and away the fastest track I've vidded, and the timings were just killing me! Thank you for your beautiful comment ZOMG love Sulu's hero moment at 0:54! Hee! If there's one clip that sums up this film, and this vid, for me, it's that one. Hero moments! ;D You know when you're clipping and you come across a clip that you just *know* has to go in? One of those moments. Personally, I quite liked the mixture of drama and light comedy. That's the way the source itself was presented so I didn't really feel a disconnect between that and how the vid came across. Drama and comedy, for me, sums up this film and this Kirk (I'm new to Trek, so can't comment on any other incarnation). It just felt like the right combination of EPIC Concrit - not much comes to mind, tbh. I think that stray frame may be timing fail on my part, but that's good to know, I'll take a look at it Thank you for your lovely comments, really put a smile on my face this morning. And, I have to confess a little emotion, because for all it's light-heartedness, this vid was made during an emotional time, and it's so nice to see people enjoying it without that shadow. I chose this vid to share first because of all my (three, heh) finished vids, it's the one I'm least invested in from a vidding and a fannish point of view, and also I think it's possibly my best. The next one I would choose to share was my first, for the show closest to my heart, and which took a rather epic year to make, so I'm a little more tentative about putting that one out there, you know? Jaz ETA: Sorry about the length, that one got away from me a bit

It sounds obvious, but the idea of using a clip that doesn't contain a character or a landscape, but is a clip of a 'thing' or an 'object', didn't occur to me for a long time! That's a great realisation. For me, objects are absolutely indispensable. For some reason they have the ability to express MUCH more emotion than, say, even an emotional face shot. I've never really figured out why, but think back to the most emotionally connective vids you've ever seen and I think invariably there's some sort of object metaphor in there, not just face shot after face shot.

ooh, i like this a lot! it's beautiful, especially the beginning, with the focus on the ships and lights/explosions etc. & i actually really love your music choice - especially because this is a shorter vid & the song is so epic. i love how it works together.

And you know, it's hilarious because I was thinking about this on the way to work the other day (as you do, vidding in the car, best place after the sofa ), and I realised that I'm such an idiot. I used an object in my first ever vid, and not just thrown in randomly, picked and chosen specifically to end one of the choruses. And you know why I didn't think of that when I was writing the post? Because the object (if you know Farscape, the coin in the coin-toss scene, if not, don't worry ) had become such a huge thing, in fandom, in meta, in fic, in vids (probably!) that I didn't even think of it as a 'thing' any more. It was like a character all by itself. Either that or NaNo killed all my remaining brain cells Jaz

tearfuleye thank you for your lovely comments! I felt exactly the same way about the song, it does feel epic doesn't it? There's something about it being shorter too, almost ends sooner than you expect... I dunno... Jaz
