I just got an idea for a bandom/RPF vid and I'm wondering where to get files to vid with, I mean something better than just downloading from YouTube. Do band fandoms have forums where you can download video files? I just don't know where to get something of better quality or if it even exists.
Alternatively, any advice for downloading and vidding with YouTube video? Seems like the quality would be terrible, although I've seen fan vids for this group that look fine.

I've just made a band RPV and in my case, I used an on-tour documentary DVD that they put out. Having said that, it was shot in the 80's and the film quality is pretty bad, anyway!
If you don't have that sort of resource available, then you can get good quality footage from YouTube. I have a Firefox browser add-on called Easy YouTube Video Downloader and it puts a little download button beneath any YouTube clip. Click on that and it gives you a drop-down menu of all the different file types and qualities you can download the clip in. So if you have a hi-def clip, you can grab a nice quality copy of it. You may then need to covert it into something that works with your vidding program, dependent on format.

I agree that it's possible to get decent quality footage from Youtube, especially if the source is in HD. I use another Firefox addon called DownloadHelper - it's not limited to ripping from Youtube, which is a plus. I've also had good experiences with DVD Videosoft, they have lots of different tools for downloading, converting to various formats, etc. Otherwise, maybe you could ask the uploaders where they got their footage from. And most fansites usually have a media gallery for videos. But I feel like it's become harder to find good fansites nowadays, where artists just use facebook for everything (and myspace a couple years back...)

Thanks, guys. I'd forgotten I'd asked this question here! I did ask a couple of vidders in this fandom, and they said they just downloaded material from YouTube. There is a tour DVD as well. In the meantime, someone also kindly uploaded a whole of vid material for the band and I downloaded it. Now, as to when I'm actually going to get around to making a vid...that's another question. kali - I did look for a media gallery but didn't find one, which I found odd.

A little late and not really adding anything new, but yes, youtube is a really good source for band videos (though I guess it also depends which band you're vidding and whether you plan to use interview or concert material, or both). My best suggestion is to try to stay as consistant as you can with the size of the video so you won't have to do a lot of cropping later. I've only made one bandom vid, but there were a few clips that had black bars all around and it was a huge pain in the butt to make it match everything else (I had to run them through a converter, strip off all the bars, zoom in, etc -- hours of trial and error).
