Anyone else feel like they are seeing a drop-off in comments and/or general engagement when they post vids now as opposed to, say, a couple of years ago? It's certainly true for me and I don't know whether it's because viewership itself has declined, or whether viewers just don't verbally engage as much as they used to. It makes sense if it's a simple migration-from-LJ issue, but I feel like I'm seeing the drop-off all over. Is there some cool new place to discuss vids that I'm not aware of? Or maybe people have generally gotten sick of discussing vids and vidding? I do feel like we end up having a lot of the same conversations over and over, and maybe that loses appeal after a while. Thoughts?

I noticed this as well. Granted, I haven't been vidding that long, I started (posting) in 2010.
I have the feeling, that I used to get more comments along the line of "Yay, great" or "I like that". I still get those (and I'm happy about each and every one, I don't want to sound ungrateful) but I feel as if there are simply fewer "causal" vid watchers, if that makes sense. It could be related to people migrating from lj. There are still many people left, but those are maybe people who actively look for vids and there are less of those who maybe "stumbled" across stuff or just took a quick look.
Mmh, I guess, this is just me taking a lot of time to say "there are less people on lj", but I hope you know what I mean.
And it's totally possible that you're right about a general change in comment culture.
As for tumblr, I had one briefly, it wasn't really for me, partly because I couldn't really find vidding related things there. Plus the communication formate on tumblr just didn't work for me.

Would you say that the number of vidders has also changed? Could people be overwhelmed by the sheer number of vids to watch and thus aren't commenting as much? Or has enthusiasm for producing vids dropped along with enthusiasm for discussing vids and vidding?

lilly - I haven't really noticed a drop off in LJ participation, but I have an extremely small reading list, so that observation basically means nothing. I don't particularly like Tumblr either. I might just be too much of a change-resistant old fogey and not giving it a fair chance, but hey, am allowed to do that. fray - I feel like there's always that cycle of people getting sick of watching/commenting and moving on for a bit, but in the past there were new people to take their place, so as a whole the community involvement was maintained even if individual people come and go. Whereas now it feels like the "old audience" is dropping away, but there's not much of a "new audience" to replace them.

I don't post often, but I've had a drop off in comments. I think the fact I've strayed away from the fandoms my friends list is interested in means less viewers. And I don't post anywhere else that would generate casual views. Maybe this is why I'm only vidding for cons and Festivids now - partly due to time constraints and partly because at least there someone will see them!

Definitely a drop off in comments, never having that many to begin with in the first instance. I think this is in part down to much of fandom moving to tumblr away from livejournal. And I do tend to vid less 'current' fandoms too.
Like I posted elsewhere, tumblr doesn't seem suited to vid posts - the majority I see are all from YouTube and I think that's where alot of the 'new audience' are to be found but they tend to be fandom based and not really too interested in the vidding process.

Also seeing this. Even in popular fandoms apparently Not sure if it's a tumblr thing, a people leaving LJ thing, or what.

I can't really say because I'm new to vidding and I have to take into consideration that it's always hard to start out as a new person in something. Very few writers or vidders just instantly get that "Three pages of comments" status. Usually it takes time and even then it all depends on whether your stuff hits a note with your readership/viewership.
I *feel*, though, that a lot of people are watching Fanvids on YouTube these days? Also I think that people have just gotten more lazy. I know I'm sounding like an old person but with Twitter, Tumblr and Facebook around people are probably used to just "liking" something or reblogging it instead of giving an actual response. I feel like I get more Kudos on my vids over on AO3, for example, than feedback on the LJ posts.

I'm seeing that too. In my case, I had assumed it was because I wasn't putting as much vids out there, so my "audience" or people that recognized my name (the decision to watch a vid or not is as much based on vidder as it is on fandom, tbh, when so many vids get posted), but it seems to be sort of a global trend?
