Hi everyone, I have a question concerning using a piece of audio in a vid. I converted the DVD with DVD shrink into .vob files which work just fine in Vegas. When I play the files in the vlc player there is audio (only on track2, because the dubbed version on track1 is horrible and I didn't include it when I converted the DVD). When I open the files with Vegas only the video track appears (with another DVD the audio track was there as well and I had to deactivate it, however, I did convert both audio tracks in that case). The converter program I have does not recognize .vob files. I'd like to extract a bit of dialogue from the audio track, but I have no idea how to do that in this particular case. Any advice would be much appreciated! Thanks in advance

Do you have DGIndex? If you do, you can load your .vob files into there and then choose "Audio," then "output method," then "decode ac3 track to wav." Then, back at the main DGIndex screen, hit f5. A window should pop up that tells you the number of your audio track (I'm figuring there'd only be one number based on your description) Go back to the Audio menu and choose "select track," then type in the number of the audio track that you saw (this is only the first number of the string in the F5 box, something like 80 or 76). Then go to the File Menu and choose, "Save Project" so you end up with a new DGIndex project file and a .wav audio file you can use for editing :-) DGIndex comes with the AMV app, and there are probably other ways of finding it. I don't know Vegas at all to tell you what's going on with the audio showing up one time but not the next.

Thank you very much for your reply and the detailed instructions. I don't know DGIndex but it sounds very useful. Is it freeware by any chance?

Thanks for that Roki! I knew how to decode to ac3 through DGIndex but that always ends up sounding tinny when I try to convert to wav elsewhere and import into my program; didn't realise you could decode to .wav within DGIndex itself. That should be very helpful.

Lilly - you can get the AMVapp here. It contains various useful things including DGIndex.

I find that DVD Audio Extractor is excellent for separating 6-channel audio to get clean dialogue. There are also free programs available. Tutorials: DVD Audio Extractor and eac3to
