Okay, I have a confession. I'm a bit messy. I'm terrible at putting things back where they go, and often I have so much stuff that a lot of it has nowhere to go, hence it sits in piles or drifts around the house.
Since I've just had my house renovated, nearly every room got turned out, so a lot of stuff got thrown away or donated to charity, and I wanted to keep that momentum going, so over the Christmas/New Year break, I've been sorting boxes, tidying, storing, etc, and it's been quite fun.
Anyone else into decluttering and home organization, or in need of it? I thought we could start a support thread, share ideas, post before and after pics, that sort of thing.

My house is so in need of decluttering, it's insane. I moved over a year ago and still have things in boxes, so basically, I am the worst. But since I have time right now I'm planning on doing a huge cleaning/decluttering/organisation thing, so, yeah, I could probably use the moral support!

I'm in the process of moving right now, and... yeah. I'm definitely a pack rat, so it's going to take ages to get through everything. The worst part is I'm moving across the country and have to ship everything I want to bring with me, so I have to toss or give away everything that isn't essential.

That's the best part. ;D We had to do the same when we moved to the UK last year, and it actually felt really awesome to rid ourselves of like 95% of our possessions. Felt very Fight Club. ;D

As a bit of a hoarder, Nicky, I think what you did would have induced a full-on panic attack in me! I've just instigated an idea from Better Homes and Gardens for dealing with paper clutter. You know, it comes in the mailbox and piles up on benches and tables because you just can't be arsed with it? Now I have an "inbox" which is a box where all the incoming paper goes. Once a week I go through it, and sort it into 3 letter trays. One is "do now" (which means within the next week), the other is "do soon" (within the next three months) and the third is "pending" which means I am awaiting an external response to it. Anything not going into those trays is either straight into the paper recycling or the filing cabinet. As long as I make sure to look at the inbox and "do now" tray once each week, it stays under control.

We have so much stuff I am considering an extension It's a bit like a the wastepaper basket thing - crap expands to fill the available space. We have an old barn where all the cars and motorbikes are parked and that's the first challenge. A sad old piano sits waiting for a sledgehammer and skip party. I'm going to tackle our stockpiles room by room this spring - I don't have the energy to do more than that at a time. Having a kid doesn't help either as they are growing out of things faster than you can believe and become unbelievably attached to old toys.

Having a kid doesn't help either as they are growing out of things faster than you can believe and become unbelievably attached to old toys. OMG tell me about it. I've been selling Griffin's old clothes on TradeMe (NZ's version of Ebay) to fund the purchase of yet more clothes, and I fell behind last year and now there are boxes and boxes of them piled up in my computer room. It's getting to where I don't know where to start. I'm just going to sort size by size and sell in bulk lots , like 5 shirts together. Last week I put all of Gareth's saleable PC and Playstation games on TradeMe. I'm never going to play them and they'll be obsolete by the time Griffin makes the age restriction on them, so I stuck them all on at a $1 reserve and it's been very amusing watching them go up. Out of 18 items, 13 will sell and most have made it to double figures. Selling stuff online is a bit time-consuming but worth it if you have something you want to put the money towards. When I renovated my kitchen, I put the old one on TradeMe at a $1 reserve, in the hope someone would buy it and take it away for free (rather than paying tip fees to chuck it out) and it went for $700, which almost covered the installation cost of the new one!

We tried to sell our entire set of possessions on TradeMe for NZ$1,000. M made an amusing YouTube video detailing all our stuff, and we got tons of watchers, but no one bid in the end and we had to sell it all piecemeal. ;D It's kinda addictive though, selling things online. A bit OT for this, but I'm actually in the middle of a little entreprenureal experiment where I bought a designer bag on sale and now am attempting to resell it on ebay for a profit. (It's a seasonal colour that's sold out, so there's a fair chance it'd go for more than I paid for it.)

The problem with large bulk lots is that not many people want all the things. *sigh* Good luck with the bag - you could make quite a wee side-business out of it to fund other bags. ;D

I went to Ikea with a friend today and bought some storage boxes - stacks of miscellaneous paper cluttering up my house, here I come!

Wow that's a result. !
We have lots of nieces and nephews so most of the clothes get passed down, but we do sell outgrown wetsuits and Ellie's motorbike gear/walking boots as it is so expensive. And like you the funds go towards getting new ones. We have some to sort and post at the moment but I think ebay is suffering a bit of slump right now plus it's finding the time.
I like Ikea but mention it to John and he breaks into a sweat and has to lie down.

It's probably just as well we don't have one in New Zealand. You'd never get me back out.
