Let's commiserate about that bitter period of time right after we've made a vid we were enormously invested in, and our brain is just as flat as a pancake, no syrup, no butter. I just finished a video that took so much out of me that I cannot even imagine starting another one right now, and yet... I'm bored, already. I want to be vidding. But no, no, no, I need a break. I cannot handle the commitment yet. Do you ever just need time between vids? Has there been a vid that has taken so much out of you that your are left... vidless? *gasp*

Heh, I wouldn't say I'm burned out per se at the moment, but I was so excited about doing like a million Festivids treats last week, and then I got stuck on my second one (mostly tech issues) and the enthusiasm passed, so now I'm feeling flat. I do have my Escapade premiere still on the go though.
To me vidding is very much an input/output process. Sometimes you're totally motivated and kick out tons of output, and sometimes you just have to chill and take in more input (i.e. watch more telly ;D ) and wait until it's charged your batteries sufficiently for you to start outputting again.

Just released a vid (last month) and I am trying to get back into the 'OMG VIDDING SQUEE' mode that sustained me for months while working on it, but...gah. My energy, where has it gone? This is usually how it happens with me. I will very rarely finish one and set to work on another straight away. This time, Skyrim isn't helping and is distracting me.

Yes! Totally! And I get a mini version of it every time I finish a big revision on a vid I'm still working on too. The more vids I work on at once, the less that tends to happen though.

I always wonder where the ten-thousand vid bunnies I had during vidding disappear to, once I move a vid to the finished project folder. How long it takes to recharge my batteries depends on strong my next idea is. It usually helps, if it's drastic change of pace or mind frame. I'm usually more energized to start, if I can do something totally different next. The anticipation of something new and shiny makes for a smoother transition.
I remember that I expected the vid burnout after 'Jesus Christ', instead I listened randomly to 'Jesus was my girl' on my mp3-player a few days before I was done and I found the idea of making two 'Jesus' titled songs in a row hilarious. I wasn't thinking very clearly at that point. Heh. But I could work out some concepts that landed on the cutting floor with the following vid.

I haven't done enough vids yet to "know" whether I typically have a burn out afterwards, but I used to have the same thing with fic writing (and still do with my original writing). Creative work is just as exhausting as physical work, I guess, so the body needs a break in between to recharge, maybe?

I have a friend who's got a theory that we're the most creative when we're really busy and stressed because inspiration is more like "mental garbage", and once we actually have time to do stuff and our mind calms down we lose all of that outburtsts of creativity.

I think it definitely is. Creatively, I have a few ideas, but after vidding Rolling in the Deep, I cannot imagine working on something else. I'm truly wiped in a way I haven't been in a long time. I've just been clipping source here and there from shows I'm hoping to vid one day because I know my need for a tremendous vidclip library. I would really like to vid Due South again, so I'm just playing music in the background while I scrub through the episodes looking for interesting shots. Busy work, like mixing paints must be for paint artists.
I do tend to mentally vid from the house to the bus stop in the morning, while listening to the ipod, but that's about as far as I've gotten. I really have no idea what I'm going to do next. I'm really kind of stuck on White Collar right now. I might do something a little less intense, and more joyous this next go around though. I need a breather.
Do you guys find a pattern in the types of vids you produce?

Eh, don't sweat it. You've been vidding long enough to know it'll happen when it happens, and when it happens, wild horses won't be able to drag you away. Good question though. I usually find myself recharging with a really simple, easy-to-put-together vid (like a movie or something with really limited source) after a big exhausting vid of work.

You'd think I would have learned by now, right? Still there is always an underlying panic of "I have nothing left to give! Oh noes!"
Yeah, I definitely think it's time for a cotton candy type vid.
Maybe with lots of near nudity? Yep. Bring it on. Only could someone do all the work for me?

I approve of cotton candy vids! ;D And I agree with Nicky, don't sweat the refractory period, almost everyone has one. I don't think there's a pattern to how I vid. Nowadays I just go with whatever inspires me at the moment. I certainly don't have enough free time for vidding to overthink things before even starting. Damn you grad school. I have noticed that I'm finding certain styles of music and source *less* inspiring than I used to, but I just see that as a natural way to inject some variety into my vidding.

Eh. My last treat for Festivids is almost done, which means I'll have submitted four vids for the challenge and my brain is completely void at this point. Zombified.
Aaaaaaaaall my projects that I have in mind sound so tiresome and either require ripping five seasons of FNL, 2 seasons of Doctor Who or all eight Harry Potter movies. Waaaaaaah. I think I may have a wee burnout.

Now that I'm done with the frenzy of festividding, I'm in serious post completed vid crash right now. I know it will bounce back, particularly with the excitement of all the vids to watch come this weekend, but at the moment even the idea of starting a new timeline (or opening up an in progress one) is like to set me off in tears.

Yeah, I'm just so relieved I'm done and can get to bed at a decent hour... I'm not in any rush to start a new one. My vidding synapses are temporarily fried. And when I do open another project, it'll probably be my Vividcon submission, because I am generally THAT slow.

I churned out a bunch in December so I'm in "burnout" mode right now, although it's more a self-imposed one. I think I've recovered enough to start a vid if I wanted to. ;D But I've vowed to finish a fic that I've been leaving hanging for years and years, so I'm trying not to distract self with a new vid until I've finished the damn thing. I don't like it, there's hardly anyone left in the fandom to read it when it does come out, but equally it feels dumb to have spent years and years writing a complete series of 44 "virtual episodes" only to stop short of the very last episode of the very last season. My propensity to dramatically slow down as the finish line comes into sight, let me show you it.
