I was asked by a member whether we could utilise the add-on chat room feature. Since the capability is there, I went ahead and created one, although I'm not sure how it'll ultimately sit with forum content. Anyway, check it out! Just choose a username to log on; I don't think it needs a password or anything. client16.addonchat.com/chat.php?id=553589&s

One of my fandoms does a weekly chat via this type of java chatroom. It's very easy--no passwords or anything--but it tends to crash my browser, and it logs you out automatically for inactivity after 15 or 20 minutes, making it less than a favorite out of the chat formats I've tried.
If people do want to do chats this way, it would make sense to schedule something specific. Unlike IRC, you can't just sit in this chatroom forever waiting for other people to wander in.

I'm running Firefox 8.0.1 on a Mac (Leopard), and I can't get the chatroom to work I get a dialogue saying I need a plugin, but a search finds no suitable plugin. In Safari I just get an empty box with a cross in the top left corner. A manual search shows (apparently) my Quicktime plugin is out of date. Is the chatroom problem likely to be a issue with Quicktime? I can't run the latest version (7.7) because there's some kind of incompatibility which causes iMovie to consistently crash every time it's opened (I had to reinstall to rid myself of 7.7 thanks to the lack of uninstall capability in Quicktime, so not keen to risk going down that route again!) I just tried it, and it worked, though I was the only one in there, LOL. It's Java based, so make sure your Java plug-in is up to date in your browser.
