I'm addicted to the books right now. 3/4 through Storm of Swords at the moment, although I'm thoroughly spoiled for all the books. Let's discuss! Probably a good idea to mark spoilers very clearly, though.

I seem to have gotten derailed halfway through Feast for Crows. It got to the point where I was reluctant to continue until the series is finished.
In a lot of ways, Storm of Swords was my favorite so far.

Vague spoilers for Storm of SwordsSoS is just so brutal, in a I-hate-this-but-I-can't-stop-reading way. I cannot wait to see it translated onto the big screen. They said they're going to have to break it up into two seasons. I hear the quality of writing may have gone down a bit in books 4 and 5 as well? Or maybe it's the prolonged waiting and hype that did it.

I watched the tv series and I've now almost finished the first book. I'm looking forward to catching up but I'm a frustratingly slow reader. I think the internet killed my attention span. XD

I hear the quality of writing may have gone down a bit in books 4 and 5 as well? It's hard for me to say whether the writing went down in book 4, but it's definitely about parts of the story that interest me less, at least emotionally speaking. I think it's an interesting book, in the ways it diverges from the first three. But it started to feel like a huge time investment when I wasn't sure whether the characters I did care about were going to come back. Now that book 5 is out, I'm slightly more motivated. (Incidentally, I read them before the miniseries.)

Yeah, the way the fourth book was set up did slow me down a bit, because I just wasn't so interested in a few minor characters that got a PoV. I also don't think the split of the plots was such a good idea and then make the fans wait years to publish 'A Dance with Dragons'. But reading straight though from 1 to 4 helped, If I had to wait for it a few years, I would have been disappointed. The fifth one was better paced.

I feel quite lucky to be still in Storm of Swords, then. It's just after midnight here and I'm just about to get into a nice hot bath and read in the bath. (Which sounds fraught with danger, especially since it's a library book, but nothing has happened yet since I started reading in the bath with book 1 so long may it last, gods be good.) I watched the tv series and I've now almost finished the first book. I'm looking forward to catching up but I'm a frustratingly slow reader. I think the internet killed my attention span. XD My husband is reading much slower than I am and is getting very annoyed at me inadvertently "spoiling" him. I use quote marks because I never really let slip real spoilers, but all the same, even the most innocuous little comment can carry some vital information. It's a hard line to tread!

I seem to have gotten derailed halfway through Feast for Crows. It got to the point where I was reluctant to continue until the series is finished. In a lot of ways, Storm of Swords was my favorite so far. I think that is probably the most common reaction. The first three are just boom-boom-boom awesome, and then he reaches the middle of the series, and.... takes his time. Talking about sand. I thought AFFC picked up at the very end, and DWD is slow in the first half but by the second half it's like he remembered where the story was going and things start happening again. I've had the experience of wanting to vid things that will likely never be filmed (Vorkosigan) but having to wait till they broadcast season three to vid what I want is a special kind of maddening! Jaime vid, wait for me!

but having to wait till they broadcast season three to vid what I want is a special kind of maddening! Jaime vid, wait for me! Me too with the Jaime vid! But I think I might be able to swing it with only s2 footage. I dunno, with GoT I almost feel as though half the fun is going to be trying to use existing footage to imply future book events. I keep having grandiose ideas like that, but it really can't work with just s1 footage. But s1 + s2 might yield enough possibilities.

I'm hoping for footage I can use to *re-work* some of the later stuff I've read. I really wanted to like Cersei once she became a viewpoint character, but I haven't been able to do it. With more objective footage, though, maybe her story could seem less alienating? I'm not sure.
I've been reading the books more or less since the first one came out, and I'd agree that pacing is a big thing for this series. Later on I felt more like I enjoyed realizing where he was going with a particular plotline than I enjoying the actual reading of it, if that makes sense. Still, I'm curious enough that I know I'll read through whatever comes out.

A Cersei vid would be awesome. I generally find it's quite hard to vid Lena Headey because she just comes across so cold onscreen, but that seems to work in unexpected ways when you think about how you could construct a Cersei vid around that. Later on I felt more like I enjoyed realizing where he was going with a particular plotline than I enjoying the actual reading of it, if that makes sense. I totally get that. Everything takes so long to get to where they're going, but he's moving the pieces with so much purpose, and even the "shock deaths", in hindsight, are thematically necessary.

I finished A Clash of Kings a while back, and should probably progress, as I do hear that the subsequent ones are full of things that are going to make me rather happy. (My reading experience goes something like LANNISTERS LANNISTERS LANNISTERS Sansa LANNISTERS oh, look, lots of other people, LANNISTERS LANNISTERS. I don't think this is typical, but I have fun with it.)
And I am desperate to make a Catelyn & Cersei vid, but I need a. a song, b. a lot more footage, and c. any confidence that anyone but me would want to watch it.

Incest and treachery and gilded corruption, these are some of my favorite (... fictional) things. And yes; I think it dawned on me somewhere in the middle of Clash of Kings that Cat and Cersei are pretty much living parallel lives, and I reallyreally want to dig into that. Can't find a damn song, though -- although, given how many seasons of footage I have to wait for, that's not so much a priority.

I am waiting until likely season 3 too to start even thinking about a GoT vid. I have read all the books top to bottom, multiple times. It's my favorite book series eva. And I totally can't wait for the explosions that take place online when certain things happen in the series. (Not going to talk about those things for the spoiler wary). Yes, internets, let me live vicariously through your pain!
