Youtube footage plays badly on the big screen, but beyond big files=pretty, I don't know much about formatting vids for DVD and for showing on TVs and projectors instead of the web. I know what the VVC submission format is, but not why it's that. If I wanted to make a DVD of my vids to pass out at cons or to submit to those that require a physical submission instead of an online one, I wouldn't know where to start. Does anyone have general advice or resource suggestions? I know how to click 'burn' in... ah... Burn; help me with the more theoretical side.

Hm. I initially copied over my process for encoding to m2v/wav, but upon rereading your question, I don't think that's what you're asking for. For DVD authoring I use TMPG DVD Author which is way old but does its job quite nicely. I never really thought about why we need m2v/wav pairs, but it works with the software via simple drag and drop, so I just go with it. It generates a folder with the (probably familiar) VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS files, which I understand if you just burn to a blank DVD disc even as data, it'll play on a normal DVD player.

Like Nicky I use TMPGenc Authoring Works 4 to create DVD's with their own custom menus etc.
If it's one file on a DVD just to stick on the TV, no menu required then I use WinAVI to convert to DVD format and then Nero StartSmart to burn/create DVD. That one uses the VIDEO_TS file that WinAVI has created.
