Yay, finally opening Premiere Covered in this screencast: Creating a project file Setting up custom presets Organizing the workspace (what do all these windows do and which ones can I get rid of) Streaming: vimeo.com/32712437 (password is: premiere) Download: fan-eunice.com/prem1.avi Forgot to mention in the screencast that Premiere will automatically remember your workspace as you last left it whenever you open it again. So between that and the custom presets, once you've done this a couple times the actual process of starting a new project is two clicks done and you never, ever have to think about it again. I reset my Premiere to the defaults for this, but for reals...I haven't actually done this aside from this project in...years.

I think I'll customize my workspace more. It didn't really occur to me till now, which is strange considering that I have custimized my PS workspace to hell. *scratches head*

astarte - I go nuts if my workspace is too cluttered up. Also, until I can afford a second monitor I want as much space devoted to the timeline as possible, so I get pretty ruthless about it . And it is just NOW occurring to me that I could actually just move the effects window tab up to the same window that holds the project bin and then I wouldn't have to be opening and closing it all the time. Hrm. Might eat up too much space from my source window though. Shall have to try it.

Another thing I completely forgot to mention in my first post was that I would have been so grateful, if someone had done a Premiere tutorial like that when I started out back in 2001 with vidding in mind. I think this is really great for newbies or people who vid with WMM or come from other NLE programs like Vegas.
I mean even I learn something new every time I vid or actually watch some tuts. My latest revelations regarding Premiere are the Presets to apply the same filter throughout the vid (I thought this copy-filter-feature got lost somewhere between 6.5 and CS3) or that you can just start typing your filter in search and it will magically appear without going through the effect folder.

Wha!? Such a thing exists? So useful! If I were still playing in Premiere I'd be so stoked right about now.

astarte - that I would have killed for any kind of video tutorial centered around vidding when I first started is most of the reason I'm doing this. I learn much better when I can see what's being done, so a lot of my early days were spent squinting at text based tutorials and then getting utterly lost doing it until I poked at enough things to go "OH, THAT IS WHAT THEY MEANT" I figured there's got to be at least a few vidders starting out who are like I was Also, ooooooooooooooh. I would really love an indepth kind of tutorial (of any kind) on the effects filters and stuff. I'm going to do some basics in the screencast after the one I'm exporting now (knock wood, I have had nightmarish technical problems with this one)...but since I don't use very many effects, if any, in my vids it's going to be very bare bones.

Yeah, absolutely - I just love this project of yours. About the two things I mentioned: I uploaded two screenshots, they don't really merit a tut on their own, because once you know where to click it's pretty self-evident. So the first one is about the Contains bar in the effect window, if you start typing in your effect, for example tint, it will give you fewer choices with every letter you type, when you are at 'tin' you only have the tint effect left, the one I was searching for. So if you know how your effect is called, this really helps to get to it faster, instead of clicking through the folders. img.photobucket.com/albums/v732/xAstartex/contains00.jpgThe Presets are also equally easy. If you have fiddled around with an effect and you have it just the way you like it, right mouse button and a window pops up, click on save preset. Add name and description and then ok. Now if you want to use it, go to presets and then just drag and drop the effect on all clips you want to use it for. I think it's possible for newer CS versions to make a preset out of more than one effect. You can always delete them, once you don't need them anymore. img.photobucket.com/albums/v732/xAstartex/presets.jpg

I think I love you so much right now! Every time I opened Premiere it asked me a million things and I had no idea what to answer and I hid from it. But you make it all make sense. Thank you!

Eunice, if we can't make a preset for a project which option is best to use? Premiere Elements 9 doesn't give you an option to create your own preset so your stuck with the given options. I've successfully made an avisynth file but got stuck when opening for new project. I believe I'm going to have to go back and change my script to make frame size 720X480 and 29.97 frame rate, is this correct?
/me kicks developer who thought this was a great idea....

Jan - Hopefully Eunice is floating around and can chip in, but in case she's elsewhere, thought I'd just pop in an say that sounds about right to me. I'm not familiar with Elements so just wanted to make sure you've searched every nook and cranny to confirm you can't make a custom framesize/rate, but if you really can't (which is definitely possible with simpler programs), then I think adjusting framesize via LanczosResize() and framerate via AssumeFPS() is as good an idea as any.

Ack, sorry. Holidays plus festividding have thrown me for a loop so I haven't been online much.
If Premiere Elements doesn't give you custom options, then yes...in your avisynth file do LanczosResize(720,480) Assume FPS ("NTSC_VIDEO")
It means editing at the wrong aspect ratio, but you can fix that in post very easily by bringing your finished vid back into avisynth and correcting the aspect ratio there before creating a web file in VirtualDub.

Obsessive-no presets for New Projects but I did find that the instruction manual said that once you drop a clip on the timeline that it will ask if you want to change the project setting. I'm not sure what this means it will to the setting; I guess I can experiment and find out. Thanks Ladies
