Yea! I'm so glad you're continuing with this. I have a few thoughts for you on your awesomeness...
I can't believe I had forgotten to comment on how much I like the Arya footage on the "I have sons fit to fight" line--it really is perfect, and I think it makes your point well.
I think I know what you're saying about the flow of the music and the editing, but I think it looks nice in a lot of points. I particularly like the traveling shot following the crow when the first lyrics "from the North" come in, and I think the fades are really effective as a transition tool because of the slow, creeping feeling of much of the song. Maybe play around more with the fade timings?
I'm with astarte on the opening--I like that there are no people in the early shots because it does set up the location well, which is so important lyrically in the song. The only clip that feels a little long to me is the first one of the wall. Maybe you could zoom in a very small amount as it goes (so not getting to the point where we see pixellation but just to add some movement)?
The clip of Robert at the beginning when we're getting introduced to Ned throws me off a little--maybe bring him in later? I very much like the clip of Ned kneeling to him later around the "bearing burdens" line, maybe that/just before is the moment to bring Robert in?
I like Theon where he is (and, no spoilers here, but as someone who's read all the books, he's a veeery interesting character to keep watching. Just saying.) because of the tension between the Stark children and Joffrey in that sequence.
I also like the jump cuts you do throughout to match with the music beat (like in those first clips of Ned drawing the sword)... maybe that's something to play with more?
I agree about the clip of Ned that fades to black--superb. I also really like the movement of the Stark children in the clips after that; it feels emotionally like they're all moving into action because of his execution, which I think is what you're going for.
The editing around the lyrics "I will bring this to your table" is really awesome--I particularly love the clips of Sansa there.
Whew--sorry to be so long winded! I really love this project, though, and hope some of these many words are helpful.

I absolutely love this. They all look so strong and fierce and truly frightening at times. I especially love that the shot of Sansa was one of the last ones. The start really works a lot better now, I think. At first it's like... is this moving or what? And then BAM. It actually made me jump both times I played the video through. Very powerful. Don't worry about the first shot being too long, it works great after you hit the jump and you understand it retroactively.

@obsessive24 Thank you for the link! I think I'll try out playing a little with colours and texture. (Note to self: choose a less difficult song next time.) astarte: Thanks! Link shall be looked up soon I did replace Theon with another swordy shot Arya for kicks last night and I'm not sure if it stays or not--this vid is really supposed to be about the Stark children, which Theon is not, and the Arya clip brings in another moment of quick movement which could be good. I'll ponder it some more. rokikurama Hee, thank you! I'm glad you like it so far. I do think that Theon is a fascinating character--I must be one of the few who counted him as one of their favourites after having seen season one--but he's not really a Stark, so I'm not sure if he should stick around. Good point about Robert--I'll push some clips around to see if I can make it work in another way. Also good point about the jump-cuts. Yes, Ned's execution setting his family on motion and on a journey for revenge is exactly what I was going for, so I'm glad this works for you! Thank you so much for all your feedback, it is very helpful! gnattery: Thank you! I really wanted Sansa to be in there and to be every bit as fierce and frightening as Robb, or Jon or Arya, so I'm glad it worked for you. I'm relieved the static opening works for you. Sorry it made you jump, though ;D

Work Day 4 (woohoo, I'm on a roll!) Latest Version on Vimeo (password still "winterfell") So. I took Nicky's advice and added a few more clips at the beginning to make the video more interesting, but I tried really hard to keep the balance between shorter clips and "static longer clips" and I think I prefer this version now. The biggest change is that I squeezed the two scenes of Ned's tree into one, and that the children appear fairly early in the video now--I felt they deserved to be introduced earlier. The bit between 0:51 and 0:56 is still a bit rough in this version but I've actually since then tweaked it a little and am happier with it now. (For one I lost the bit of Ned bowing to Robert in the tomb since he already does that when Robert arrives and it seemed repetitive, and I've changed Sansa's scene to a bit from Winterfell, which seemed to fit more in colour and tone.) I also took rokikurama's advice and moved Robert a little further down the timeline, and I fiddled with the length of some of the clips. Also Theon is gone now--I really liked the clip of Arya I tentatively replaced it with, so it's going to stay. She does look a notch too happy and triumphant there but I like the fact that she defeats her teacher there, which brings the "fit to fight" bit to a nice full circle, methinks. I think that at least editing-wise I'm as good as done now and it's amazing how much more satisfied I am with the vid now. The question still remains what to do with it now. It's now sitting on my hard drive going, "So, I'm technically finished, right? What now?" Last night, I was all in favour of using colours and texture to spice it up, but the vid seems more dynamic to me with the recent changes and I'm wondering if adding too much stuff might in fact be distracting rather than helping. Also I fear that since the source wasn't a DVD rip the quality might get really bad if I try to do too many fancy things with colour balances and the like. Maybe just play around with the contrast a little?

Actually I think you may have misunderstood me. I didn't mean "add more clips", I meant "add motion to existing clips". Both versions work for me quite well, and I'm not sure which one I prefer. Although I have to say, for me the really long static clip of the Great Hall at 0:29 looks a bit out of place now, because things were moving so much more quickly beforehand. But maybe that's just me. If you're happy with it, I don't think there's much need to embellish. That was just a suggestion if you weren't happy with how it sits by itself. By all means I think try it out if it interests you, but at the end of the day it's your vid. You're perfectly entitled to do what you want with it. If it feels finished to you, it probably is.

Actually I think you may have misunderstood me. I didn't mean "add more clips", I meant "add motion to existing clips". Oh. *facepalm* Out of curiousity--how would I do that? I figured to add more motion to clips I'd have to add things? (I'm very new to SonyVegas, can you tell?) I definitely like the first introduction of the children and want to keep that, not sure with the second batch of random Stark clips so I may change it back. Thanks for all the input, though! It's been massively helpful, you have no idea :-)

I started screencapping, then thought there's an easier way of doing this. Just look up tutorials on Youtube. Here's one:
Hope it's clear on the basics. If not, just ask away. It's just hard to explain everything from scratch so the YT tute is a useful starting point. ;D

Thank you! I've fiddled around with the zoom a little and though it's just minor adjustments I think they have helped to get a little motion in otherwise really static clips (like the one of Bran looking up to the tree). I've officially declared the vid finished now. I could probably tweak this thing forever but that probably wouldn't help. I'll now go and think of a watermark and perhaps adjust the colours a little--which I'll do with the whole vid in one go and not with each individual clip, because I'm lazy

I know you declared your vid finished, but I did write an updated version of my postprocessing tut. From what I gathered in the other thread, you should have most programs already installed, so you could try out most of the stuff.

Yeah, I only saw that you posted your vid after I replied here - but you can use the postprocessing completely independant from your editing program and it's a lot of fun playing around with a final encode.

Although I have no constructive criticism to give you, may I just say, your draft(s) are great and I absolutely love the song choice I love you choice of focus - and I do hope the Starks will be able to avenge the wrong doings brought upon them by the Lannisters - I have only watched up to EP5 of Game of Thrones, but you've edited the video so I feel I don't need to know the backstory I also think your choice in song was perfect for the video overall, as your acknowledging the contrast between North (Stark) and South (Lannister) and 'From the North' puts across to the viewer that you are looking at things from a Stark family view. ((This is my first time giving video feedback in a BETA environment so I hope it was okay ))
