So I am going to begin a vid and try to remember to post all my drafts and notes and copies of chat transcripts I have about it with my cheerleaders/etc.
I have this informal project where I'm trying to vid as many Avengers as possible before May, just to keep my squee burning hot and since I finished my Tony Stark vid recently, I'm moving onto other characters. I have a loose order in which I want to tackle them but I'm surprised that I latched onto Bruce and the Hulk so quickly. Here's how that sort of came about this past weekend.
Saturday night: (I am paraphrasing)
me: I AM VIDDING ALL THE AVENGERS! YAY. TONY, YAY STEVE, YAY EVERYONE. AVENGERS EARTH'S MIGHTIEST HEROES, ANIMATED YAY
sisabet: I love Ed Norton's Hulk!
me: That's the one I haven't seen. I should fix this.
sisabet: I LOVE Ed Norton's Hulk.
me: ...high praise, high praise. *sort of skeptical*
Sunday
So I went ahead, watched it and was rather impressed at the execution and characterization of Bruce from the 2003 Bana version. I was ready to vid this even before the movie was over and had spent a few minutes pausing here and there to actually scroll through my itunes and ponder.
me: I LOVE BRUCE. *to everyone* I NEED A SONG! Help me find Bruce's song!
The next few hours were spent going back and forth with sisabet and a few others and she kept throwing T-Payne and Chris Brown related rap at me and this was not feeling like Bruce. Because it.. it just wasn't, okay. I mean, if she did it, it would be Bruce, but this is me doing Bruce and that's different than her doing Bruce. And that's okay, but I still was on the hunt.
I knew if I wanted to do a LULZ fun dance vid about this movie, I could go this route:
Sexy and I Know it - LMFAO
But that would not convey the AAAAAANGST of Bruce. So that was out.
I knew pretty early that I wanted a song that was... sort of harsh. But not harsh. Because he's the Hulk AND Bruce. Something melancholy, but also high octane. Peering at my itunes, I was first gravitating to Breaking Benjamin (my favorite), Adema... Bad Religion. Hard rock, metal, punk.
Dear Agony - Breaking Benjamin
Giving In - Adema
Infected - Bad Religion
But it didn't seem to cut both ways, even with the slower tracks, more mellowed out things they had to offer. They either felt too generically rock, too boring. Too one-dimensional and/or literal. Sisabet threw some Rolling Stones at me, Weakerthans. Violent Femmes. Other stuff I can't remember. These were not things that were not pinging me at all whether it was because of the lyrics, tempo or tone of the music. It just didn't feel right.
Blister in the Sun - Violent Femmes
But that's okay, even getting songs that don't work for me helps a lot because it just fortified what I thought I wanted or felt for the vid idea anyway.
I was eyeing my Toxicity album for System of a Down and kept going back to ATWA, which is technically a song about Charles Manson’s cult and ideas on ecology. ATWA stands for Air, Trees, Water, Animals.
ATWA - System of a Down
This is an amazing song. The lyrics are angst, there’s mellow instrumental parts. The lyrics would make sense in place of Bruce and the pain he has to endure for being the Hulk. But I felt kind of uncomfortable since the song is... about Charles Manson. I mean there’s even a Wiki page on it: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ATWA/
I kept it on the back burner since it felt so good for what I was thinking and feeling but... I couldn’t use the song because it would just weird me out, knowing what the song was about. I couldn’t decontexualize the song enough for my means.
At one point that evening sisabet linked me to the Alternate Opening for The Incredible Hulk in which Bruce Banner tries to commit suicide. And I was FLOORED. I mean I get why it was taken out of the film but, jfc, BRUUUUUUUUCE. Couldn’t even keep your heartrate down long enough to make it all go away. Goddamn. That just. Really solidified my UNDYING NEED to vid Bruce and his angst.
Anyway. I stiiiiilll didn’t have a song and it’d been like... or 4 or 5 hours already, trying to find something useable. Because I wanted to start the project as soon as I could but I needed a song. If I didn’t find my song that night or in the next few days I threatened my friends that I would just pick the most applicable Ke$ha track and go with that.
Anyway. I have a habit of going on YouTube or last.fm, starting with a song/band, and then spending a few hours bouncing around 'related videos/artists' and hope I stumble upon vidding gold.
At one point I ended up at progressive rock and 10 minute tracks... which was TOO far in the other direction, so I backtracked my way through System of a Down, Static-X, Breaking Benjamin and started queueing up some ambient rock tracks.
I came across this:
New Day - Pianochocolate
This was instrumental but had a sort of interesting and epic vibe that I kind of knew I was getting closer to what I wanted or needed.
At least I had some strong ideas of what I wanted: mellow, but harsh and madcrazy for the Hulk, but with the ANGST. Bruce first, Hulk second. Which meant I couldn’t go the way of Adema or KoRn. Except I looked at my The Essential KoRn album again and peered at Freak on a Leash, remembering I heard a beautiful acoustic version of it at some point because it was from an MTV Unplugged live recording event. I began listening to a few of the regular album tracks while looking up that event -- bought the unplugged album and realized I had EXACTLY what I needed in KoRn for my vid. KoRn, a metal band doing acoustic. HARSH AND MELLOW. The instrumentals were toned down for the acoustic’ness but the texture of the song conveys the angstful sentiment.
I had it. Falling Away From Me. !!!
!!!! This is IT. THIS IS MY BRUCE SONG. I put it on my ipod so I could listen to over the next few days while I think more on specifics.
For reference, this is the album version:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=w6wPUGbSgns
At some point I will talk about song choice meta in the future on what it would mean to vid this instead of the unplugged version.
But the unplugged/acoustic version. That was it. Hell yeah.
In the meantime, here are the lyrics to Falling Away From Me:
Hey, I'm feeling tired
My time is gone today
You flirt with suicide
Sometimes that's OK
Hear what others say
I'm here standing hollow
Falling away from me, falling away from me
Day, is here fading
That's when I'm insane
I flirt with suicide
Sometimes kills the pain
I can't always say
'It's gonna be better tomorrow'
Falling away from me, falling away from me.
(Chorus)
Beating me down, beating me, beating me down,
Down, into the ground, screaming so sound,
Beating me, beating me, down, down
Into the ground
(falling away from me)
It's spinning round and round
(falling away from me)
It's lost and can't be found
(falling away from me)
It's spinning round and round
(falling away from me)
Slow it down
Beating me down, beating me, beating me
Down, down, into the ground, screaming so sound,
Beating me, beating me, down, down
Into the ground
Twisting me, they won't go away
So I pray, go away
Life's falling away from me,
Its falling away from me,
Life's falling away from me, FUCK!
Beating me down, beating me, beating me
Down, down, into the ground, screaming so sound
Beating me, beating me, down, down
Into the ground
(falling away from me)
Beating me down
(falling away from me)
Beating me, beating me
(falling away from me)
Down, down
(falling away from me)
Into the ground
Screaming so sound
(falling away from me)
Beating me, beating me
Down, down
(falling away from me)
Into the ground
In the next day or so I’ll finish writing up how I’m breaking the song down in my head and what I have visually swirling or settled on before I’ve even begun clipping.
In conclusion:
BRUUUUUUUUUCE. I feel your pain so much, and now I can share it with everyone else via the musical stylings of KoRn unplugged. \o/
ETA: sorry some of the YouTube embeds make you go to the site, some of them I couldn't find embeddeable links at the moment.
daughter of an ETA: thanks Nicky for making a new forum and movin' this here!
