I love to make music. I've been teaching myself how to play the guitar for sixteen years now (on and off though, so I'm not as good as I could have been by now) and started taking lessons last year. I also play the recorder and a bit of Tin Whistle, and I'm currently trying to teach myself how to play bluegrass mandolin as well. And I can play a few chords on the ukulele. I kind of like to sing as well. In 2004 I was introduced to filk and have been attending German and British conventions ever since (and made some wondeful friends there). When I grow up I want to learn how to play the cello. One of these days, folks... Anyway, I'm curious--anyone else here like to make music? What instruments do you play?

I grew up playing the accordian and piano, and later the guitar, but now... nothing. Think I have forgotten everything by now.

The accordian? That's amazing! I'm currently trying to teach myself one particular piece on the keyboard--shouldn't be too hard in theory, as it's just chords and bass notes, but somehow I can't get it to work. So, kudos to you (Ah, I bet it'd all come back really quickly!)

obsessive24 - Accordion!! legoline - Like you, I've been trying to teach myself guitar, going on, wow, 15 years. I hadn't counted recently. ;D I'm not very good at all, but I still play around a bit with my acoustic. I gave up on piano lessons as a kid after one summer. I wanted to play cello too but those things are big to lug around! Violin is my main instrument. I started playing at 9 and played all throughout school and beyond. The last time I got to play in a group was about 5 years ago with a community orchestra, and I miss it. I'm pretty rusty these days. *sigh* Sometimes I take out my violin and play a few tunes, with a heavy steel mute so as not to bother the neighbors too much.

Oooooooooooooh, violin! I have a good friend who plays the violin and we sometimes perform at filk cons together. It's such a lovely instrument!

I used to play on flute, many years ago. And I also tried to teach myself to play in guitar formerly, but I failed.
Anyway, I admire musicians, because playing music is a cool thing, but playing music professionally is awesome!

I started out on recorder when I was young - descant, then alto and sopranino. After that I moved to the flute, and played in the orchestra at high school. I also sang in the choir. Then I got into pop music and taught myself rudimentary guitar (I can bash out most of The Eagles' songs, LOL) until settling on bass guitar, emulating John Taylor from Duran Duran, whom I adored. I played that in the school jazz band and then formed a band with a friend after I left school, in which I played bass and sometimes mandolin. I also sang in a 3-part harmony vocal group for a few years. I was never particularly good at anything. I was reasonable at flute and bass. I wrote a couple of songs and one did get made into a demo.
These days I don't have time to play anything but I do love to sing in the car, and at karaoke if I have the chance.

There are different classes of recorder? Mind is blown!

Used to play descant and treble recorders at school and for a while, Clarinet. All abandoned as I was unable to read music quickly enough ;-) I used to play by ear. I can still pick out a tune though, when I want.
Obsessive24 - I'm impressed about the accordian. I love hearing that instrument.

thedothatgirl - the interesting thing, I think, is that the kind of melodies we learned to play on the accordian in China are quite different to the kind of tunes you would associate with accordian music in the European tradition or whatever. In China, the accordian was treated much more like the poor man's piano and therefore the music choices leaned very heavily toward epic, dramatic styles that don't really sit well with the accordian sound, IMO.

@obsessive24 I think it's fascinating how Chinese music differs from the European one. I saw a Chinese opera on the telly once--it was so different from the European opera, but very beautiful and very fascinating.

There are different classes of recorder? Mind is blown! Yeah, mad, huh? Descant is the one most people play, because it's in the treble clef, but sopranino (smaller) and alto (bigger) are both in alto clef, from memory. There's also a bigger one again, but I could never stretch my fingers between the holes properly. Oh, I also played tuned tympani in a percussion group for a bit, but that's only because I had a crush on the drummer. I have a history of fancying drummers, LOL.

I played clarinet for 6 years in highschool, alto saxophone for 2-3 years, and keyboard halfheartedly on and off for a couple of years afterwards. Playing in my school band was one of the most enjoyable things in my life. These days I think vidding and coding have kind of replaced what I used to get out of music.
