I'm looking to buy a program that converts avis to MPEG-2s. (In theory, if I ever have the money again but it can't hurt to be prepared, right? ) For one, not having to do the clipping beforehand saves me a lot of space on my harddrive. But also I've found that if I have to do the clipping before I vid I'm quite limited with the stuff I can use--I have to decide before which clips I may need, and if I suddenly find I need something else I have to go back and do more clipping and it's just a bit of a hassle. SonyVegas doesn't like the avis I convert to VOBs, but apparently it works fine with MPEG-2s. This one is slightly cheaper than Prism, which Nicky recommended to me, and I was just wondering if anyone has any experience with it? www.any-video-converter.com/mpeg2-converter.php Are you using converters? If so, which ones?

Ah, crap. I found a freeware program that encodes to MPEG2, but when I opened that file in SV and tried to save the clip SV died on me again

Out of interest, have you had any luck with MPEG-2s yet? Cos it sounds like Vegas keeps dying whenever you use MPEG-2s? Just don't want you to get into a situation where you're out of pocket and then it crashes Vegas anyway.

Nah I managed to convert an episode of New Girl to MPEG-2 using a freeware program but it just crashes on me So I guess I better not spend money on anything. I wonder if I should try and switch to Premiere. I just really, really like SonyVegas.

Did you try the free trial of Prism? I think it's probably worthwhile to at least try and see if that MPEG-2 would work. Although by all means try Premiere too - I'm keen to hear if you like the interface.

I haven't yet--I probably should. But SV just died on me while I was using VOBs from a DVD rip so I'm getting slightly worried now...

Me again I've been using Avidemux to get my big avis converted into Xvid, but since I've started using Avisynth the files have gotten incredibly big, so big in fact, that Avidemux refuses to work with them. So I'm looking for a new program. Nicky suggested AutoGK. However, the website for the download seems to be down (has been for a few days), so I was wondering how you guys get your avis converted to Dvix or XVid? (Rumor has it Virtual Dub Mod converts to DVix but I'm not sure yet how...I guess I'm lacking a codec )

I found a mirror but that one lead to the original site, too, so I assumed most of the mirrors would. Sorry to be so much truble (I'm also a bit paranoid about which download sites to trust on the web, particularly if it's websites I've not heard of before.) (Also, thanks for the link to the VDM tutorial--I have all codecs installed, it turns out, I'm just not sure how to work the audio properly. I'll have a look) (I'm also really, really sorry to be such a nuisance. Sometimes I feel like the least tech-savvy person on Earth. I'll try to make amends. I promise.)
