I want to make a fanvid as a Christmas present to someone (and because I fear they might be lurking here I won't reveal the source material) and...I just can't find a song that makes me go, "Yes, perfect!" So after days of browsing bandcamp and going through all the albums I have on my computer I turn to you, trusted vidders of music tastes manifold, for help. The source material is contemporary drama and I'm striving to make a slash vid (can be unrequited love, I'm not certain yet). I'm looking for a slightly mellow, pensive or sweet song (which really narrows it down, I know), something that might fit a shippy vid without being too much on the "I love you forever and ever" side. It should be more subtle, I guess, as I hope the vid's going to be. However, all the songs I did find featured the word "She" or "Girl" or the girl's name at some point, which doesn't really work because it's all about guys ;D. So, question: can you rec me, from the top of your head, a song or even a band that might be worth while checking out? I'm running out of options, so any kind of help is appreciated I really liked the song Nicky used for her Covert Affairs vid "A Girl, A Boy and a Graveyard", both moodwise and arrangementwise. I love simple accoustic songs, but that's really just a pointer. Really, I'm grateful for any pointers and suggestions. It should be the easiest thing in the world to find a fitting song for this but somehow... Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi? ( Also, feel free to hijack this post for your own song-ish needs )

Are you looking for male vocalists as well as lyrics that don't use female pronouns?

icepixie: a female artist would be fine. I almost had a song sung by a female artist, actually, and then at the last moment the song turned out to be clearly about a girl. Curses! ;D @katybird: Thank you! I will check it out

Eeeeexcellent. These are almost all in the you/I mode, and don't tend to go into third-person. Pretty much all the bands/artists have a similar style for most of their music, so if my song suggestions don't work, they might have something else that does. Hem - I am, um, embarrassingly fangirly about this band. Really, it's a little sad. They have several songs that could work, but I'll limit myself to the most likely four: "Redwing" - It doesn't come out an announce itself as a love song, but I think the exhilaration easily makes it one if you want it to be. "Pacific Street" - Again, not announcing itself as a love song, but could easily work as one. Also, gorgeous. "Idle (The Rabbit Song)" - Ditto to the above. It's more on the upbeat end of the scale. "Things Are Not Perfect In Our Yard" - Might be good for a more established relationship tone, or for a pairing that overcomes obstacles to be together. (Okay, one more: "He Came to Meet Me," which is a lovely song, but it tells a pretty specific story.) Girlyman - "The Shape I Found You In" The Wailin' Jennys - "Asleep at Last" - This might be a bit less subtle than you want, although I really like the multiple metaphors they use to describe the specific kind of love they refer to. Peter Bradley Adams - Two possibilities, both of them fairly traditional love songs: "Keep Us" and "Between Us" The Weepies - "Painting by Chagall" - This does have the lyric "You're Mars, calling up Neptune's daughter," but they're already pretty far into a metaphor at that point, so I don't think you absolutely have to read the speaker as a girl. Brandi Carlile - "Closer to You" - Maybe peppier than you're after? Antje Duvekot - "Coney Island" - This is explicitly gendered on the line "I'll be your stolen pirate bride," but it's such a fantastic song I couldn't help including it. It's kind of long, so you might be able to edit that out. Also, again, metaphorical, so I wouldn't blink at hearing it in a vid focused on two guys. Kate Walsh - "Your Song" - This gets a little inane toward the end of the chorus, but I'm always charmed by the rhyme of "I'm stuck on a boy / who fills me with joy." Rosie Thomas - "Since You've Been Around" - It possibly says something about me that this song works for just about every pairing I ship. But perhaps this also speaks well to its flexibility?

Yessssss, I love playing find the right song! Let me proceed to scare you away with this lengthy, over-enthusiastic music spam! I thought these up before you posted your reply that female vocalists are all right. So if these four dozen songs are not enough, I can find more! (I also thought these up before watching the Covert Affairs vid and your Spooks vid and realizing these might be a bit old-school and/or gruff for your taste. Oops.) Greg Brown -50% of this guy's discography fulfills all your criteria. I'm trying to be really restrained here. -Lately www.youtube.com/watch?v=TC20abXe3qo -Real Good Friend www.youtube.com/watch?v=QyEbax4zuxc -Good Morning Coffee www.youtube.com/watch?v=2VEPCZ7cONE -Think About You www.youtube.com/watch?v=mg-fF-eDyO8 -Hey Baby Hey www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tm5xngEaYyY -Let me be your gigolo www.youtube.com/watch?v=x2e57cTFbTM&feature=related -Someday when we're both alone -Waitin' on you -In the dark with you -You don't really get me, babe -Hurt so nice -Marriage chant -In the water -I wish I was a painter John Gorka -Love is our cross to bear (not melodramatic like the title would have you think) www.youtube.com/watch?v=o1wuJI5U8EY -The one that got away www.youtube.com/watch?v=VGhepvPhVMU - I saw a stranger with your hair www.youtube.com/watch?v=1jXyoj3kNcMTom Waits- Even though he's known for songs that are weird and disturbing (and AWESOME), he's also done a lot of heartfelt ballads -Picture in a frame www.youtube.com/watch?v=3pwxD8quPCg -I hope that I don't fall in love with you www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSe2k3P8wRE -I want you www.youtube.com/watch?v=DVd6bwYSOuI&feature=related -I'm your late night evening prostitute www.youtube.com/watch?v=3fz8jcm-bV8 -Blind Love www.youtube.com/watch?v=UZGIK990m-A -Grapefruit Moon www.youtube.com/watch?v=LN0uBPt0UOA&feature=related -Please call me baby www.youtube.com/watch?v=eo3ilqhf1tEIf you want a lusher sound, Southside Johnny & LaBamba did an excellent Tom Waits cover album that has those last two songs Grateful Dead - Ripple www.youtube.com/watch?v=CFsbAuX9P4wDan Bern - Sweetness www.youtube.com/watch?v=pBmUDJ7293YBilly Joel -52nd Street www.youtube.com/watch?v=gRN9kUJbQe8&feature=related -And So It Goes www.youtube.com/watch?v=cTfTjVtZO8Q -Ain't No Crime www.youtube.com/watch?v=WWS5xUF1nlA (That last one is probably more upbeat than what you're looking for but I'm including it because of the line "Now you tell me you love somebody and you'll love them forever...but you don't like them all of the time") Randy Newman -Losing You www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qva9nTdESoQ -I Miss You www.youtube.com/watch?v=OB3iGBGX_3w -Feels Like Home www.youtube.com/watch?v=-bcPgotwOaA -Let Me Go www.youtube.com/watch?v=hSDzd_SVRuw -Living Without You www.youtube.com/watch?v=iTcfrdh4krk -Every Time It Rains (can't find it on youtube but here's a Joe Cocker cover) www.youtube.com/watch?v=9NoVfiTR8qELeonard Cohen -Hey, that's no way to say goodbye www.youtube.com/watch?v=KgI3BOA8ky8 -Always www.youtube.com/watch?v=X4sdWwpcB3wNot for just a second, or a minute, or an hour, Not for just a weekend and a shake down in the shower -Be for real (cover of Frederick Knight song; can't find the original on youtube) www.youtube.com/watch?v=mRYmR7mDp80&feature=fvst -I'm your man www.youtube.com/watch?v=iW8rFho6In8&feature=related

icepixie: Ah, the joys of awesome harmonies in a song ;D Let me proceed to scare you away with this lengthy, over-enthusiastic music spam! There is no such thing as an overenthusiastic music spam. There's only one kind of music spam, and that's the fantastic kind ;D This is all fab! I shall go devour the songs (I looove music, did I mention that?). Also, I really love all kinds of music, from classic rock to the occasional heavy metal, from classical music to blues, folk and indie, it's all there. The only kind of music I can't really warm up to is Rap ANYWAYS, thank you! (I love Leonard Cohen. My fave is, "So Long, Marianne") That Greg Brown chap sounds amazing, hadn't heard of him before (she confesses in shame).

Man, I wish we were a slightly more active forum. I would totally suggest a separate music sub-forum just for different music search threads. I'm all set for Festivids and Escapade, but I can always use more recs of Super Cheese suitable for overwrought slash vids. (Or maybe I should just go vid Secret by Heart.) I don't listen to much contemporary indie type stuff. I'm more of a big hair and truck driver's gearshift girl (or big asses and latin beats), but I do have a few things that might be worth looking at. I'm basically scrolling through my ipod here, and womanfully resisting recommending the likes of Belinda Carlisle. But for what it's worth: Bronski Beat: 80s synthpop. Male vocalist with a high-pitched voice. Sometimes pensive, sometimes overwrought. Very, very gay, and often political. Culture Club - The Crying Game: Yes, yes, I am actually recommending Boy George. Say what you like about Karma Chameleon, but The Crying Game is a totally underrated and very pretty song about lost love. Roxy Music: Male singer. Lots of rather pensive songs about love. I've always been partial to Avalon. Fanny: The first all-female band signed to a major label. They wrote their own stuff, and they predictably got buried by history, so you'd have to listen to them on emusic or iTunes or something (there isn't much on youtube, and you won't find lyrics online). The Pretenders - 2000 Miles: I love the wistful feeling in this song so much. It's a song about Christmas that doesn't make me want to murder my fellow man in a gruesome fashion! Eszter Balint: A lot of her music isn't about romance, but I love the sound of her album Mud so much. She's definitely more on the depressing/wistful end if you're doing a shippy vid. Penguin Cafe Orchestra - Perpetuum Mobile: a.k.a. Franzi likes the unusual time signatures article on Wikipedia a little too much. This fabulous piece of instrumental music has been used for a million things, but it's fabulous, and you shouldn't let that stop you from using it too. Devil Doll: Female singer. Very retro, but such feeling! Lots of depressing songs about disasterous romance, and most of them are up on youtube. Sultans of Swing: Male singer. They have lots of mellower songs. On Every Street might be nice, though there's one bit of lyrics that could be hard. Emilie Simon: Female vocalist with lots of creepy/wistful songs in English and French. Also, boo, rap is awesome. There are just a lot of different kinds, some more accessible than others and some more Utter Garbage that Gets Radio Play than others. Try Oaistar or something.

acridnym - I love you for suggesting John Gorka. I'm always trying to use his songs for stuff. (And I think I FINALLY have a character for "Always Going Home.") I've been trying to find the right source for "Love Is Our Cross to Bear" for years. The only song of his I ever managed to vid was "Raven in the Storm." The other singer/songwriter I'm always trying to find fandoms for is Chuck Prophet. He usually has a "girl" or "she" in his lyrics, though. (I still want a fandom for "Pin a Rose on Me." Justified, maybe?) I'll definitely be checking out some of the ones you recced. Sounds like we have similar tastes.

I'm looking for a slightly mellow, pensive or sweet song My husband has loads of this sort of stuff on his playlist. I'm not so familiar with all of it, but this one sprung to mind: Or something slightly more up-tempo from my own favourite artist, Howie Day: They're both about aspects of love without mentioning gender.

littleheaven I must bookmark this Howie Day fella. I love those songs you posted! I adore him. He was a discovery of my husband, who brought the CD "Stop All The World Now" home from a shopping trip one day and it remains the only CD that I own (out of about 800) that I like every song on. His most popular song is "Collide" which I believe Sweetie made a fantastic Cordelia/Angel vid to quite a few years back. Funny, though, I've never managed to vid to him myself.

littleheaven 800 CDs? WHOA. ;D I don't think I have quite as many ( yet, hehe), but still, I'm not sure I could name one that I like every song on...maybe "The King Is Dead" by The Decemberists. Also, this is completely OT but I don't know where else to tell you this: I found your Scrubs vid via your homepage and it's the bestest thing since sliced bread. The musicality is incredible in that one.
